Movies Out This Friday The 13th Weekend

So I’m a little late with this but whatever. Friday the 13th is considered a day of bad luck as well as one where we get our horror fix at the movies. This weekend is no exception as this Friday the thirteenth we get the release of  two horror movies, Cabin In The Woods and Detention.

Cabin In The Woods is a movie written by Joss Whedon (Buffy The Vampire Slayer) and Drew Goddard (Cloverfield) and directed by Goddard. It was a smorgasbord of everything you could think of from horror movies minus the torture porn stuff that we usually see in these kinds of movies. Don’t get me wrong, It still had plenty of killing and blood. The way the movie starts lets the audience in that something is going to be something different about  this movie. You aren’t sure what but you are ready. Then it goes into the clichéd horror story that we’ve all seen before. 5 college kids go on a road trip to an isolated cabin for the weekend and the killing begins. After that you are in for the most awesome ride. The movie to me wasn’t necessarily scary but there was so much going on that the entire time you just watch thinking this is so awesome. It reminded me of the horror films from the 80’s that were funny, witty and scary all at the same time. I just love Joss Whedon so much. This movie was the first horror movie that I’ve liked in a long time. Check it out in theaters now.

Detention is a high school slasher movie which stars The Hunger Games’ Josh Hutcherson, Dane Cook (Waiting, Dan In Real Life) and Shanley Caswell. It’s about a group of kids at Grizzly Lake High School who are thinking about one thing, Prom. They soon find out that a serial killer is on the loose and now they must figure out who’s trying to

kill them.  This movie is insane. There are so many scenes in it that felt like they came from a bunch of different movies. I thought the movie was ok. Really random. The thing I really liked about the movie was the soundtrack. It had me dancing in my seat and made me want to watch some of the old Backstreet Boys videos. This one I would save for the Redbox but if you must, Detention is in theaters now.

Silent House Review

Silent House stars Elizabeth Olson stars in this “horror” thriller as a young lady who finds herself sealed inside her family’s secluded lake house and trying to find her way out. She starts to panic and it turns into a very ominous scene in and around the house. The movie tries to take you on a suspense and tension filled journey by shooting it real-time in one single shot.

This movie is an average thriller with a twist that can be seen a mile away. The end is something that makes your skin crawl but if you paid attention from the beginning, you already saw it coming. It’s not really scary although there are some parts that will make you jump out of your seat. As average as this movie is, Elizabeth Olsen’s is not. She turns out a pretty good performance with what she is given to work with. I like her and hope she keeps getting more work. If you have not seen her 2011 breakout role in Martha, Marcy, May, Marlene, check it out. It’s a wonderful movie.

Silent House is in theaters this Friday.

I Watched So That You Don’t Have To: The Devil Inside

The Devil Inside is the latest take on the faux-documentary style horror film. Taking a page out of the movie that started it all, The Blair Witch Project, it proceeds to use every single tired cliché you can think of when it comes to the horror documentary and exorcism movies.

The story is about a woman who killed three people while an exorcism was being performed on her. She is institutionalized after being seen as not guilty by reason of insanity. The movie then cuts to 20 years later where her daughter with the help of a documentary filmmaker goes to find out if her mother is just mentally ill or demonically possessed. She gets two priests to do a couple of exorcisms that are unauthorized by the church. From there everything goes horribly wrong, and the only piece of evidence is the footage that was caught by the filmmaker.

The best thing about this movie is that it is only an hour 15 minutes long. I saw this movie for free and I want my money back. The scariest parts of the movie were in the trailer and even then those weren’t scary. I expected this because I really haven’t been scared by a movie since… I don’t know, but it’s been a while. It’s also pretty predictable as pretty much when the beginning when they mention something about an aspect of the exorcism tells you exactly what is going to happen to everyone.

The group I was with for the screening walked out laughing and talking about what a trash movie that was. We also determined that the movie was worse than what I thought was almost the worst movie of the 2011, The Darkest Hour. The worst. Honestly save your money people and if you really want to watch a movie this weekend go watch Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. And if you are a glutton for punishment, the film is in theaters today.
