Videos, Videos, Videos

Not one to watch many music videos but there are a few that I recently watched that I wanted to comment on.

John Mayer – “Shadow Days”

“Shadow Days”  is the first single from Mayer’s new album, Born and Raised, out May 22nd. I love Mayer’s music. He’s just so great. I like this song and the video is minimalist at best which I also like. Sometimes you don’t need a lot to tell a story with visually about the song. I’m sad though because this will probably be it for the promotion of this album as he has had to cancel his tour because of some problems with his vocal cords.

Rihanna – “Where Have You Been”

This song is one of my favs from Rihanna’s Talk That Talk album and I didn’t know it was going to be a single but it makes sense. This video is just giving me EVERYTHING right now. I love it. She’s actually dancing in it for more than a couple of seconds and its not dutty wining. There is actual true choreography. Granted it is fairly simple but this Rihanna, do yall remember the “Pon De Replay” video? Ok so lets applaud some effort lol. Although that is like getting a medal for last place but whatever. I have to get her on her little belly dancer hip movement though. Hahah she tried but it was so stiff. Regardless this is going on repeat along with the “We Found Love” video.

May is coming up and many of our favorite shows are about to take their summer hiatus. I was going to do this myself but TVLine has put together a nice calender of when they all end so in the spirit of laziness check it out. I will be doing a post on all the renewals and cancellations as well as one on when all the debut dates for summer shows are.

The Lucky One

The Lucky One is an adaptation of a Nicolas Sparks 2008 book of the same name. It’s about a marine named Logan, played by Zac Efron (High School Musical, New Year’s Eve), who return s home to try to find the woman in a picture that he credits with saving his life.  He finds the woman, Beth, played by Taylor Schilling (Liked her on the cancelled NBC show Mercy) in a small town in Louisiana and from there, romance isn’t far. Blythe  Danner (Meet The Parents, Sylvia) also stars as Beth’s grandmother.

Quick thoughts as I watched this movie.

1. I feel so wrong watching Zac Efron with his shirt off (he’s definitely not bad to look at), making out with this woman because he is 10.

2. There is absolutely no chemistry with Zac and Taylor. I just don’t believe them at all.

3. Schilling looks so much older than Zac. i know she is supposed to play older but they are only 3 years apart in real life.

4. I know I’m already going to get someone who dies in the movie after all it’s Nicolas Sparks,  he can’t help himself but at least make me care about the person who dies. The only thing I thought after it happened was, “Tough break.”

5. How did Blythe Danner birth Gywneth Paltrow? She’s so much cooler than her daughter.

6. The little kid is cute and I don’t usually like kids.

This movie is not great at all. Just save your money but if you just have to see it, it’s in theaters now.

Think Like A Man

Michael Ealy & Taraji P. Henson

Think Like A Man is the adaptation of  comedian Steve Harvey’s best-selling self-help book, Act Like A Lady, Think Like A Man about enlightening women about the way the minds of men work. The characters are introduced as some of the various chapters in the book i.e “The Dreamer, The Woman Who Is Her Own Man, The Mama’s Boy, etc. The ensemble cast includes people from funny man Kevin Hart, Michael Ealy (My gosh this man is beautiful), Taraji P. Henson, Meagan Goode, Regina Hall, Jerry Ferrara and Gabrielle Union. When I posted the trailer for this back in December (it’s almost May where has the time gone), I wrote that I had no expectations about this movie. A friend and I even talked about how bad it would suck.

Well I can say after seeing it that it most definitely didn’t suck. In fact it was hilarious and most of that is because of that little man Kevin Hart. He pretty stole the show. There were consistent laughs throughout the whole movie. A slight lull here and there but I would find humor in some of those things like when Meagan Good would make a certain face trying to “act” or in some of the more cheesy lines (see most of Goode’s scenes with Rolmy Malco). She was a definite improvement from how bad she usually is.

I think she would be fine if she didn’t play a slight variation of the same character ALL the time) or in some of the more cheesy lines. The ending of the movie was pretty predictable but even knowing how its going to end doesn’t stop you from thoroughly enjoying it. Be sure to check it out in theaters now.

REVENGE IS BACK. Do You Even Care Anymore??

ABC’s Revenge is back again after a 6 week hiatus. Yeah 6 weeks. Does anyone really care anymore? The way people’s attention spans go, a show can’t take that many breaks in between and expect the audience to come back to it. Luckily the show is back for the rest of the season (6 more episodes) until the finale which airs May 23rd.  If you have forgotten what has been happening check out this episode on ABC that recaps the whole season so far as well as the Huffington Post that did a nice little, if not slightly complicated roadmap to the show. Revenge is back tonight on ABC at 10/9c. Watch the promo and some sneak peeks at Episode 17, “Doubt.”

Movies Out This Friday The 13th Weekend

So I’m a little late with this but whatever. Friday the 13th is considered a day of bad luck as well as one where we get our horror fix at the movies. This weekend is no exception as this Friday the thirteenth we get the release of  two horror movies, Cabin In The Woods and Detention.

Cabin In The Woods is a movie written by Joss Whedon (Buffy The Vampire Slayer) and Drew Goddard (Cloverfield) and directed by Goddard. It was a smorgasbord of everything you could think of from horror movies minus the torture porn stuff that we usually see in these kinds of movies. Don’t get me wrong, It still had plenty of killing and blood. The way the movie starts lets the audience in that something is going to be something different about  this movie. You aren’t sure what but you are ready. Then it goes into the clichéd horror story that we’ve all seen before. 5 college kids go on a road trip to an isolated cabin for the weekend and the killing begins. After that you are in for the most awesome ride. The movie to me wasn’t necessarily scary but there was so much going on that the entire time you just watch thinking this is so awesome. It reminded me of the horror films from the 80’s that were funny, witty and scary all at the same time. I just love Joss Whedon so much. This movie was the first horror movie that I’ve liked in a long time. Check it out in theaters now.

Detention is a high school slasher movie which stars The Hunger Games’ Josh Hutcherson, Dane Cook (Waiting, Dan In Real Life) and Shanley Caswell. It’s about a group of kids at Grizzly Lake High School who are thinking about one thing, Prom. They soon find out that a serial killer is on the loose and now they must figure out who’s trying to

kill them.  This movie is insane. There are so many scenes in it that felt like they came from a bunch of different movies. I thought the movie was ok. Really random. The thing I really liked about the movie was the soundtrack. It had me dancing in my seat and made me want to watch some of the old Backstreet Boys videos. This one I would save for the Redbox but if you must, Detention is in theaters now.

Weekly TV Wrap up

I watched a lot of great tv this past week. Here are some shows that you should give a try.

Happy Endings – This show had it’s season finale this past Wednesday and it was one of the funniest episodes of the season. I just love this show. The whole cast is just sooooo funny. If you haven’t watched this show, GET ON IT. I I don’t know how many times I have to tell you. I literally laugh out loud to every episode. Here is a clip from the finale where Jane (Eliza Coupe) finally gets asked to be in the wedding.

Between this show and New Girl, I get a pretty good ab workout from all the laughing. Speaking of…

New Girl – This past Tuesday’s episode of the show was hilarious. Everyone finds out about Cece (Hannah Simone) and Schmidt (Max Greenfield) and it is the greatest thing that could have happened. Was was dying this whole episode. There was a line by Schmidt after everyone finds out that just about killed me. He says, “I am so sorry you had to hear about it like this. But can we take a minute to celebrate me? It’s like I’m having Indian every night!” Really!!!  It’s just so funny. This is another ensemble comedy that has only gotten funnier as the season goes by. Can’t wait to see what’s up next for the gang. Watch the episode where Winston (Larmone Morris) finds out about Schmidt and Cece as well as other episodes  of New Girl on Hulu. Be sure to catch new episodes on Tuesdays at 9/8c on FOX.

Scandal – Shonda Rhimes new show that premiered this past Thursday was good. I thought the premiere was pretty solid. There were a couple of things that bothered me a little here and there like Columbus Short’s (Stomp The Yard, This Christmas, Ex-Britney Spears choreographer) acting but I can get over that because he’s nice to look at. I don’t watch any Rhimes shows currently on air just because I never really tried to. Once I missed the first season of those shows I never tried to. So I wanted to give this one a try. Kerry Washington and Tony Goldwyn make the show for me. Washington was great. She pretty much carried the show and Goldwyn, I have liked from several of his movies (The Pelican Brief, Kiss The Girls) and guest stints on stuff like The Good Wife and Law And Order: Criminal Intent. The show was a little slow but picked up and it has potential. The ratings weren’t as great as they hoped but they were solid. I look forward to watching some more. Watch new episodes Thursdays at 10/9c on ABC.

Bent – This was a show that NBC premiered 3 or 4 weeks ago with no promotion and put in a really terrible time slot with a really bad lead in. You would think that the show was something awful that they were trying to get rid of. Turns out not so. The show while not anything groundbreaking or the absolute best show on tv, was pretty solid. It starred Amanda Peete (The Whole Nine Yards, Studio 60 On The Sunset Strip) as Alex, a recently divorced woman who downsizes into a smaller house and hires Pete (David Walton; Perfect Couples, Burlesque), a free-spirited ladies man and recovering gambling addict who desperately needs this gig with Alex to jumpstart his life and prove that he is no longer a screw-up. The show got great reviews; some of the best reviews NBC had received for any of their new comedies. NBC needs to get with the fact that they are a 4th place network and publicize their shows for people to watch. I’ll stop ranting and just say check out all 6 episodes of the show on Hulu.

The Voice – It’s only season 2 of this show and something is off already. It just isn’t that good anymore. I can’t exactly pinpoint what it is but it probably could be that the singers aren’t great at all this season. I think there might be two or three good singers out of the bunch and that is sad when last season most of the voices were pretty great and that kept the show really interesting. I’m losing the victory on this one and it just might get cut from the dvr soon. Watch new episodes every Monday at 8pm/7c and Tuesday at 9pm/8c.  Here is one of the better singers Jamar Rogers from this season.

Saturday Night Live: Bein’ Quirky With Zooey Deschanel

Sofia Vergara hosted Saturday Night Live this weekend and one of the better skits was the Bein’ Quirky bit with Abby Elliot as Zooey Deschanel. Her impersonation of Deschanel is pretty spot on. Vergara plays The Nanny’s Fran Drescher in an ok impersonation. Kristen Wiig is also in this skit as Zooey’s best friend, Drew Barrymore. It’s hilarious.

Vodpod videos no longer available.

Also check out this other skit they did spoofing Andy Cohen and his Watch What Happens Live show on Bravo. It’s hilarious because its so true.

New Premieres Tonight

Sunday Night premieres tonight are mostly from the lovely Showtime network but there is also one  from Lifetime.

Nurse Jackie, Showtime 9pm/8c – Season 4 Premiere. Love this show. This season is going to start off with Jackie (Edie Falco; The Sopranos) at rock bottom from her family finding out about her prescription drug addiction. She heads to to a rehab while All Saints (the hospital they work at) is taken over by a new director (Bobby Cannavale; Third Watch) who makes a major change in personnel. I’m so glad that there have finally revealed Jackie’s addiction to her family. Just hated how she was getting away with everything. From the promo looks like it’s going to be a pretty good season.

The Big C, Showtime 9:30pm/8:30c – Season 3 Premiere. Cathy (Laura Linney; The Savages, Kinsey) receives medical news that gives her reason to hope for recovery; Sean supports Andrea’s newfound appreciation for her heritage; Adam turns to prayer to help his ailing mother. Excited for this season because Susan Sarandon (Stepmom, Jeff Who Lives At Home) is going to be guest starring thought it.

The Client List, Lifetime 10pm/9c – Series Premiere. Jennifer Love Hewitt (Party of Five, Ghost Whisperer) stars in this series that was based on the Lifetime movie of the same title that Hewitt played in the year before. The show is about a single mother who makes ends meet by working as a massage therapist at an overly accommodating day spa. I’m not even gonna lie, I watched the Lifetime movie of this and I’ll be watching this as well lol.

The Borgias, Showtime 10pm/9c – Season 2 Premiere. This season is the continuing the saga of the 15th-century family, headed by patriarch Rodrigo Borgia aka Pope Alexander VI (Jeremy Irons; The Man In The Iron Mask, Margin Call) — which blended the influence of the Roman Catholic Church with plenty of temporal power and wealth (not to mention heaping helpings of sin and debauchery along the way). In tonight’s premiere, Pope Alexander VI takes a new lover and throws a big party for the citizens of Rome; the rivalry between Cesare and Juan finally boils over; Della Rovere narrowly escapes an assassination attempt.

New Show: ABC’s Scandal

Be sure to check out Scandal, the new show from Grey’s Anatomy creator, Shonda Rhimes. Kerry Washington (Ray, Save The Last Dance), Columbus Short (Stomp The Yard, Death At A Funeral), and Henry Ian Cusick (24, Fringe) star in the show about heading off or eliminating scandal of the very rich, famous and powerful of Washington, D.C.  Hopefully this show will be good. Watch the premiere tonight on ABC at 10/9c after Grey’s Anatomy.
