What To Watch: October 8

The CW premieres officially start this week and I for one couldn’t be more excited (The Vampire Diaries on Thursday ahhhhhhhhh). Here is what premieres tonight.

8/7c – CW – 90210 – Season 5 Premiere. Naomi and Max make some big plans that go horribly awry when they both get arrested and land in jail. Liam is forced to put The Offshore up for sale to pay off Vanessa and buy out her $200,000 interest in Liam’s movie contract. Navid approaches Liam about becoming his business partner. Teddy is overwhelmed by Silver’s request to father her baby. Adrianna, unaware Dixon has gotten into a life-threatening accident, has an unforgettable evening in Las Vegas with a handsome stranger, Taylor, after she vows to get over Dixon and move on with her life. Annie asks Ade to return to Los Angeles to be with an unconscious Dixon, and the two girls decide to move into the beach house together. This show is so deliciously ridiculous and I just love every minute of it. I seem to have a love for the “evil” people on most of the shows I watch so of course AnnaLynne McCord’s Naomi is my favorite.

9/8c – CW – Gossip Girl – 6th and Final Season Premiere. After a brief encounter abroad, Chuck and Blair make a promise to each other about their relationship, which leaves them once again apart. Dan, with some help from an unlikely ally, Georgina, is writing a scathing tell-all book that can only mean trouble. As the sole head of The Spectator, Nate is making his own decisions and is ready to go up against Gossip Girl. As word spreads that Serena is missing, the gang bands together to find her and are shocked by what they find. This show has been downhill for a long time and should have ended about 2 seasons ago. Glad it’s ending now though. I mean it’s come to the point where I have this show on mute and only look to see what they are wearing. This show and Revenge have the best costume designers. I mean the clothes are just so amazing.

9/8c – TV One – Life After – Season 4 Premiere. Exploring the turning point in celebrities’ careers that altered their lives forever, the half-hour series highlights these moments from the point of view of the celebrity and those in their inner circle. In each episode, a celebrity reveals the stories behind the transformative events in their life, and the ways in which they evolved from these experiences.

Sparkle Review

Sparkle is a remake of the 1976 film of the same name. The film is set in the 1960’s about three sisters that form a girl group and on their rise to fame, things become challenging  as the close-knit family begins to fall apart. Sparks plays Sparkle, the quiet, good girl who writes the songs for the group, Tiki Sumpter(Gossip Girl, The Game) plays the sister who has other plans and only joins the group to help her sisters and make some money to go to medical school and the beautiful Carmen Ejogo (Sally Hemings: An American Scandal; Lackawanna Blues) plays Sister, the Diana Ross like lead singer of the group. Whitney Houston, in her last role, plays the overbearing single mother who is a recovering addict and doesn’t want will do everything in her power for her girls to not to end up down the path she went.

Many people will say this is a Dreamgirls rip-off. Not quite. The original Sparkle was released before the original Dreamgirls and kind of served as a blueprint on what to do and not do when they made another movie loosely based on the Supremes. It’s not a Dreamgirls copy but since that was the last girl group biopic that came out, it’s going to get the comparisons. It’s not as good as Dreamgirls, but it is a solid movie. Jordin Sparks, in her first acting role, is perfectly fit as Sparkle. Sparks natural innocence and good girl nature are pretty much perfect for this part. I don’t know why she isn’t bigger than she is because her voice is soooo great. Houston is not in the film as much as they made you believe but her parts were pretty well acted. Whitney has always been a better than ok actress so it was kind of nice to see that even after all the years of craziness that she had been through, she still had it in her to give a good slightly melodramatic performance. Carmen Ejogo is so stunning and a great actress. She plays Sister so well.

Sparkle is not perfect but its pretty good and worth seeing at least to watch Whitney tear up a rendition of “His Eyes on A Sparrow.” It just gets to you. So powerful.

Sparkle is in theaters today.

Season Finales Monday 05/13/12

Bones – FOX 8/7c – Season 7 finale. The “hacktivist” is back in court on appeal, and Booth and Brennan have to work to prove he is guilty once and for all but in their effort to pin another murder on him evidence comes to light that points to Brennan being a suspect.

How I Met Your Mother – CBS 8/7c – Season 9 finale. Lily goes into labor while Marshall and Barney are in Atlantic City; Robin and Ted try to distract Lily from her labor pains. It then jumps to the future on Barney’s wedding day where the gang remembers the time they encouraged Ted to go after the one that got away.

Gossip Girl – CW 8/7c – Season 5 finale. Blair is targeted by Gossip Girl, forcing Serena to make a confession; Nate asks Lola to move in with him; Lily makes a decision about her marriage; Blair makes a choice between Dan and Chuck.

Two And A Half Men – CBS 9/8c – Season 9 finale. Jake graduates from high school and must decide what to do with his life. This makes me feel really old because this kid is graduating high school and when this show started he was like 9 years old.

Hart Of Dixie – CW 9/8c – Season 1 finale. A huge storm is coming towards Bluebell and looks to ruin George and Lemon’s wedding day. Zoe seeking shelter from the storm gets stuck in a barn with Wade. Yes maybe these two will finally get together tonight. And we’ll have all of next season for more back and forth with them because CW renewed it for a second season. YAY!!!

Mike and Molly – CBS 9:30/8:30c – Season 2 finale. It’s Mike and Molly’s wedding day but of course it doesn’t go off without a hitch. Throw in your classic sitcom roadblocks on their way to the altar for a half hour of fun hijinks.

Hawaii Five-O – CBS 10/9c – Season 2 finale. The team goes on a manhunt when one of its own is killed; a team member must choose which one of their kidnapped loved ones will survive. This season has been a pretty good one. Last season’s finale was so good. Hopefully this one is just as good if not better.

Smash – NBC 10/9c – Season 1 finale. This is what it all comes down to. Who will be Marilyn; Karen or Ivy? I don’t even know who I want anymore but I feel that based on the soapy nature of this show that Karen is going to get it and then Ivy, in her pissed off state, is going to tell Karen that she and Dev slept together. Apparently Ellis’ true intentions are also going to be revealed on tonight’s finale. I don’t care as long as we get rid of him somehow. I don’t think I have ever hated a character more than him. It’s not even a oh I love to hate him thing like with Derek. Ellis is just a waste and he needs to go far far away.
