The Watch was ok. There were some hilarious parts and but for the most part it was just ughh. The last Ben Stiller and Vince Vaughn venture, Dodgeball was wayyyyyyyyyy better. I’d save this for Redbox.
Step Up Revolution or as I like to call it So You Think You Can Dance All Star Edition is the fourth installment in the Step Up franchise. This time there is no cameo from Channing Tatum (He’s too big for this now) or anything else remotely great about this movie. But then again you don’t go watch Step Up expecting anything of substance. Basically the acting is bad, the plot if sub par and the only good thing to hang on to is the dancing. While not amazing it’s pretty good. This one is definitely another to save for the Redbox.
Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler both announced this week that they will be leaving the American Idol judging panel. There has been speculation for weeks about Lopez’s exit but Tyler’s came a little as a surprise. But not that surprising as there were rumors of major shake ups on Idol coming (Budget cuts, lots of firings). There are even some talks about Randy Jackson moving towards being a mentor towards contestants and not being a judge. Now that these two have left, who is going to take their place? Some of the names being tossed around as replacements are Adam Lambert (season 8 Idol runner-up), Celine Dion, Charlie Sheen, Mary J. Blige and Mariah Carey. I love Mariah and I think she would be great. It still wouldn’t get me to watch the show though. I don’t think anything could. All these big names they want are expensive though and I don’t see any of them except Lambert taking less than $15 million for the gig. Just to put it into perspective Lopez made $20 million per year as a judge. That isn’t going to save them any money at all. I’m sure that in the coming weeks there will be more speculation and a ton more names thrown out there as replacements. It’s always funny watching the process unfold.
Get ready ladies. Another round of Magic Mike is on the way. Channing Tatum said “Yes, yes and yes!” during a Twitter interview with Glamour U.K when asked about a sequel to the his hit movie. “We’re working on the concept now. We want to flip the script and make it bigger.” Hmmm I don’t know about a sequel to this movie. Granted I liked it and all but there is no need for a sequel. The movie was resolved. If there were to do a sequel Tatum’s character wouldn’t be in it because at the end of the first one **SPOILER** he quits stripping. I mean there is plenty of eye candy there to continue I guess but story-wise it just needs to end.
R&B singer and songwriter, Frank Ocean’s new album, Channel Orange was released a week early this past Monday on Itunes. And while that might not seem like a problem for most people, apparently Target took offense and has decided not to stock the physical album that will be released this coming Tuesday, July 17th. Ocean’s manager, Christian Clancy was not happy about this and tweeted, “Target has refused to carry Frank’s album because of iTunes exclusive. Interesting since they also donate to non-equal rights organizations.” This in reference to Target having made donations to anti-gay political organizations. Ocean essentially came out revealed the week before on his tumblr page and that seems to be the reason Clancy is bringing that up. Target has come out and said their reasoning for not carrying the album is because Ocean’s management team released the album online first and not for any other reason. I would believe Target except Jay-Z and Kanye West did the same thing when they released their joint album, Watch The Throne, last August and Target still carried their album. It doesn’t matter to me though. I was always going to get the album and it was always going to come from Best Buy who will surely reap all the benefits from carrying the album. Channel Orange is now available on iTunes and in stores this Tuesday. Check out his performance on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.
There is a new Walking Dead trailer for season 3 that came from Comic Con this week. It shows the survivors working together to clear the undead from that ominous prison glimpsed at the end of the last season. The footage also shows a katana-wielding new character Michonne (Danai Gurira) slicing through zombies and teaming up with Andrea (Laurie Holden). The trailer ends with a shot of Michael Rooker’s scumbag character Merle, who escaped from a pair of handcuffs by slicing off his appendage back in the first season. In the third season footage, Merle sports a knife for a right arm. This looks crazy as hell. Can’t wait for it to start. The Walking Dead season 3 premieres October 14 on AMC.
Yay more Hunger Games news. Lionsgate has announced that they are going to be splitting up the third installment of the series, Mockingjay into 2 parts. They will start with Catching Fire hitting theaters on November 22, 2013, Mockingjay, Part 1on November 21, 2014, and Mockingjay, Part 2 on Nov. 20, 2015. This way, like the Harry Potter and Twilight franchises, every Thanksgiving families can head out to the theaters and see kids kill each other. Entertainment Weekly has a nice article on the possible places where they could split it up. There are many spoilers so if you haven’t read the book don’t even click on the link.
“Ahhhh”, “Oh My Gosh”, and “Woooooo” are just some of the utterances that come out of theater goers mouths as they watch the new Steven Soderbergh (Ocean’s 11, Contagion) directed dramedy Magic Mike, starring Channing Tatum in a movie that is loosely based on his life as a stripper before he started acting in Hollywood. Tatum plays Mike a veteran dancer, who takes a kid (Alex Pettyfer; I Am Number 4) under his wing and schools him in the art of partying, picking up women, and making easy money while working at the Club Xquisite.
No one is going to this movie for its plot. This movie is all about the man candy that is Tatum plus Joe Manganiello (True Blood), Matthew McConaughey (A Time To Kill, Lincoln Lawyer), Matt Bomer (White Collar), and Adam Rodriguez (CSI:Miami). There is a plot there though. It starts off as all fun and games until things take a slightly darker turn in the middle. The acting is also not shall I say horrible. Tatum, while extremely cheesy and over the top with his dance movies has had major growth with his acting since we first saw him Coach Carter. He’s still not the best actor but I can always applaud improvement.
Go out and see Magic Mike. Make it a night out, get liquored up and loose and then head to the theater for some laughs and squeals and don’t take it too seriously.
MTV movie awards are one of the most ridiculous of the many award shows out there, but they are always good for a few laughs. This year was hosted by Russell Brand again because no one else will dothis show.
This pre-show is a hot mess. Kat Graham (The Vampire Diaries) is a hot mess. Seriously Bonnie? What is with this terrible weave and your outfit is not any better. Ugh. Love the shoes though. Here is a transcription of her interview with Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield. Kat to Emma Stone – “I am here with the lovely Emma Stone and I think there is somebody hiding behind you.” Andrew – “I’m not hiding.” Kat – “You’re not hiding.” Andrew – “No.” Kat – “Oh, he’s just being Spidermanny and stuff.” Awkward laughter from everyone. WTH??
Yes FUN. I love their single “We Are Young.” Such a good song. It makes me think of some Queen songs. YESSSSSSSS they brought Janelle Monae out to do her part of the song. Continue reading 2012 MTV Movie Awards→
Don’t be fooled by the trailer guys. If I hadn’t seen this movie at a screening this week, I don’t think I would have gone to the theater to see this. The trailer looked like one of those movies where they put all the funny stuff in it and the rest of the movie sucks. This was not the case with 21 Jump Street. We were literally laughing the entire time.
The movie stars Channing Tatum, Jonah Hill, and Ice Cube in this remake of the 90s television show that starred Johnny Depp and Holly Robinson Peete. The movie has the same premise as the show; young rookie cops go undercover in a high school as students and try to find the source of a new designer drug that kids are overdosing on.
I really liked that they knew they are a remake and that some of their jokes aren’t original and they were able to make fun of themselves. It was great. I feel like this movie is going to be a case of the audience liking this movie and critics panning it. But don’t listen to them. This movie was great and you should go see it. You’ll definitely have a good time. Also it has some pretty good eye candy 😉
The worst thing about romantic comedies is always the last 10 – 15 minutes of the movie when the girl or the guy goes and makes some grand gesture to show their love, whether it’s hailing a cab to get you to JFK in 2 seconds in the middle of rush hour traffic or running down the street yelling like a mad person to get the attention of the object of their affection. None of these happen in The Vow to which I am very thankful for.
The Vow is a film starring Rachel McAdams (The Notebook, Sherlock Holmes) and Channing Tatum (Step Up, Haywire) as Paige and Leo, a married couple that gets into an accident that puts Paige in a coma. When she wakes up she doesn’t remember her husband or how she came to have the live that was presently living. Leo then tries to win his wife back and make her fall in love with him again.
While this sounds every sappy, clichéd, romantic movies, there was more than that. It had its moments but overall they toned down the over dramatic moments I hate in these types of movies. It was enough though to make 5 out of 6 of my friends that I saw it with whip out the Kleenex. I thoroughly enjoyed myself watching this movie though. I really like Rachel McAdams. She just completely shines in almost everything she does and Channing Tatum’s acting has improved some. Some of the scenes where he is crying and talking about his relationship with his wife were just so heartbreaking. It was just good. But if you feel that his acting wasn’t that great, there are plenty of shirtless scenes to make up for it. (Sidenote: He has such an ugly cry face). The supporting cast was pretty good. Love Jessica Lange (American Horror Story) and Sam Neill (Jurassic Park).
I think it’s a good chick flick. Nothing spectacular but if there was a list of movies like this that have come out in the last 2 years, I would put it up there. But I don’t know if that says that the movie was good or that the romantic movies from the last 2 years have been utter crap.
Haywire is an action-thriller directed by Steven Soderbergh (Contagion, Ocean’s Eleven) which stars Gina Carano, an MMA star and newcomer to the acting game. Carano plays Mallory Kane, a trained op who works for a government security contractor. After a job that almost goes off the rails, she is double crossed by her own people and becomes a target chased by skilled assassins. The film boasts plenty of hot male star power in Michael Fassbender, Channing Tatum, Ewan McGregor, Antonio Banderas, Bill Paxton, and Michael Douglas.
The trailer to this movie didn’t do anything for me and I went into this movie thinking I would get a couple of nice fight scenes out of it and possibly get surprised by Soderbergh. But such was not the case. This movie was just a straight up action movie. Now I’m not such a snob that I don’t love a straight up action movie but I just didn’t like this one. There was barely any plot or dialogue and when there was some dialogue it was pretty bad. You would then think well if that wasn’t there then the fight scenes must have been amazing? WRONG. I mean there were some good ones (the one at the beginning of the film with Channing Tatum is a little brutal but good as well as the scene with Fassbender) but overall not that great.
The entire movie is pretty much a showcase of Carano’s MMA skills. I’m not an MMA fan, well at least I’ve never given it much thought, so maybe if I was I would have enjoyed it more. For whatever reason the critics have been loving this movie more than audiences. It currently has an 80% rating from critics versus 44% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes. The only thing that even remotely saved this movie from being a complete disaster for me is the variety of eye candy spanning from the young (Tatum, Fassbender) to the older (Banderas, McGregor, Douglas).
21 Jump Street, the show that ran from 1987 – 1991 and launched the careers of Johnny Depp and Holly Robinson Peete has gotten a face lift and is moving to the big screen. The trailer was released last week and stars Channing Tatum (Step Up, She’s The Man, GI Joe), Jonah Hill (Super Bad, MoneyBall), Ice Cube (Friday), and Brie Larson (U.S of Tara). I wasn’t in the country during the show’s run (I was also 2 years old when it started) but I caught it in syndication during the mid 90’s and loved it. The premise of the show was cops went undercover in highschool. Yes this sounds ridiculous and so unbelievable because all the actors were way above high school age and would never pass as one, but it was a fun show. This was my first experience with Johnny Depp. He was great not the actor he is today but you can see his potential in the show. Depp has said himself that he didn’t enjoy his time on the show but it’s clear that he knows this was his big break and that’s why he’s makes a cameo in the new movie. Holly Robinson Peete also makes a cameo in the new movie. I don’t know how they came up with this new cast though because the only person that could pass for a high schooler is Brie Larson. The trailer looks like your standard action movie and it should be entertaining and a good time just like the tv series was. Plus there will be lots of man candy with Tatum there.
