Thoughts on The Amazing Spiderman said by the wonderful Owen and Lisa from Entertainment Weekly.

Entertainment News

Some entertainment headlines from the past week.

Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler both announced this week that they will be leaving the American Idol judging panel. There has been speculation for weeks about Lopez’s exit but Tyler’s came a little as a surprise. But not that surprising as there were rumors of major shake ups on Idol coming (Budget cuts, lots of firings). There are even some talks about Randy Jackson moving towards being a mentor towards contestants and not being a judge. Now that these two have left, who is going to take their place? Some of the names being tossed around as replacements are Adam Lambert (season 8 Idol runner-up), Celine Dion, Charlie Sheen, Mary J. Blige and Mariah Carey. I love Mariah and I think she would be great. It still wouldn’t get me to watch the show though. I don’t think anything could.  All these big names they want are expensive though and I don’t see any of them except Lambert taking less than $15 million for the gig. Just to put it into perspective Lopez made $20 million per year as a judge. That isn’t going to save them any money at all. I’m sure that in the coming weeks there will be more speculation and a ton more names thrown out there as replacements. It’s always funny watching the process unfold.

Get ready ladies. Another round of Magic Mike is on the way. Channing Tatum said “Yes, yes and yes!” during a Twitter interview with Glamour U.K when asked about a sequel to the his hit movie. “We’re working on the concept now. We want to flip the script and make it bigger.” Hmmm I don’t know about a sequel to this movie. Granted I liked it and all but there is no need for a sequel. The movie was resolved. If there were to do a sequel Tatum’s character wouldn’t be in it because at the end of the first one **SPOILER** he quits stripping. I mean there is plenty of eye candy there to continue I guess but story-wise it just needs to end.

R&B singer and songwriter, Frank Ocean’s new album, Channel Orange was released a week early this past Monday on Itunes. And while that might not seem like a problem for most people, apparently Target took offense and has decided not to stock the physical album that will be released this coming Tuesday, July 17th. Ocean’s manager, Christian Clancy was not happy about this and tweeted, “Target has refused to carry Frank’s album because of iTunes exclusive. Interesting since they also donate to non-equal rights organizations.” This in reference to Target having made donations to anti-gay political organizations. Ocean essentially came out revealed the week before on his tumblr page and that seems to be the reason Clancy is bringing that up. Target has come out and said their reasoning for not carrying the album is because Ocean’s management team released the album online first and not for any other reason. I would believe Target except Jay-Z and Kanye West did the same thing when they released their joint album, Watch The Throne, last August and Target still carried their album. It doesn’t matter to me though.  I was always going to get the album and it was always going to come from Best Buy who will surely reap all the benefits from carrying the album. Channel Orange is now available on iTunes and in stores this Tuesday. Check out his performance on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.

There is a new Walking Dead trailer for season 3 that came from Comic Con this week. It shows the survivors working together to clear the undead from that ominous prison glimpsed at the end of the last season. The footage also shows a katana-wielding new character Michonne (Danai Gurira) slicing through zombies and teaming up with Andrea (Laurie Holden). The trailer ends with a shot of Michael Rooker’s scumbag character Merle, who escaped from a pair of handcuffs by slicing off his appendage back in the first season. In the third season footage, Merle sports a knife for a right arm.   This looks crazy as hell. Can’t wait for it to start. The Walking Dead season 3 premieres October 14 on AMC.

Yay more Hunger Games news. Lionsgate has announced that they are going to be splitting up the third installment of the series, Mockingjay into 2 parts. They will start with Catching Fire hitting theaters on November 22, 2013, Mockingjay, Part 1on November 21, 2014, and Mockingjay, Part 2 on Nov. 20, 2015. This way, like the Harry Potter and Twilight franchises, every Thanksgiving families can head out to the theaters and see kids kill each other. Entertainment Weekly has a nice article on the possible places where they could split it up. There are many spoilers so if you haven’t read the book don’t even click on the link.

YESSSSSSS!!! Love him. This and the casting of Jena Malone as Johanna Mason have given me hope that new director Francis Lawrence is not gonna screw up my favorite book in the Hunger Games series, Catching Fire.

Magic Mike Review

“Ahhhh”, “Oh My Gosh”, and “Woooooo” are just some of the utterances that come out of theater goers mouths as they watch the new Steven Soderbergh (Ocean’s 11, Contagion) directed dramedy Magic Mike, starring Channing Tatum in a movie that is loosely based on his life as a stripper before he started acting in Hollywood. Tatum plays Mike a veteran dancer, who takes a kid (Alex Pettyfer; I Am Number 4) under his wing and schools him in the art  of partying, picking up women, and making easy money while working at the Club Xquisite.

No one is going to this movie for its plot. This movie is all about the man candy that is Tatum plus Joe Manganiello (True Blood), Matthew McConaughey (A Time To Kill, Lincoln Lawyer), Matt Bomer (White Collar), and Adam Rodriguez (CSI:Miami). There is a plot there though. It starts off as all fun and games until things take a slightly darker turn in the middle. The acting is also not shall I say horrible. Tatum, while extremely cheesy and over the top with his dance movies has had major growth with his acting since we first saw him Coach Carter. He’s still not the best actor but I can always applaud improvement.

Go out and see Magic Mike. Make it a night out, get liquored up and loose and then head to the theater for some laughs and squeals and don’t take it too seriously.

Movie Reviews (Seeking A Friend, Ted, People Like Us)

Seeking A Friend For The End of The World is all about the last three weeks leading up to the earth being destroyed by an asteroid. During this time, Dodge (Steve Carell; The Office) gets ditched by his wife and ends up bonding with his  neighbor Penny (Keira Knightley; Atonement, Pirates of The Caribbean), who leads him on a road trip to reconnect with her family and his high school sweetheart. A sweet, simple and kind of sad romance is portrayed in this movie. This isn’t like other romances when they show the couple is going to live happily ever after at the end. Nope, you know this is going to end with them both dying which I kind of love because if you have read any of my reviews on romantic movies or know me personally, you know I hate the last 10 mins of the movie which is all about happily ever after. Carell and Knightley are good actors but their whole romance is just a little weird because of their age difference. I have definitely seen movies where the age difference works but here it just doesn’t really but that is really a minor problem. The best thing about this movie though is the supporting cast. From Patton Oswald, Connie Britton, and Martin Sheen to Derek Luke, Rob Corddry and Adam Brody, the supporting cast make have the funniest and the most heart tugging parts of the movie. Seeking A Friend For The End Of The World is in theaters now.

Screen Gems “Think Like A Man” Getting A Sequel

Think Like A Man is getting a sequel. Deadline is reporting that the writers, Keith Merryman and David A. Newman, who wrote the hit film, have been hired to start working on the follow-up. The film which wasn’t expected to make a lot of money opened at #1 when it was released in April and has since grossed $91 million. The film starred many people from Gabrielle Union, Jerry Ferrera, Micheal Ealy to Meagan Good, Taraji P. Henson, Kevin Hart and Romany Malco. No stars announced yet for the follow up but Steve Harvey, author of the best-selling book the film is based on, will be returning as an executive producer.

Why are they making a sequel to this? Yes the movie was good and it was successful but that still doesn’t mean there needs to be a sequel. I think they did a good job of ending it where there is no need for a sequel. I hate when movies that studios and Hollywood don’t believe will make money do and so they think they can make the magic happen twice. Guess what rarely does that happen so they just need to stop because I can name on one hand the amount of sequels that were better than the originals.

Tyler Perry: Action Star??

That’s what they want us to believe in the new trailer for Alex Cross, the James Patterson adaptation in which Tyler Perry will pick up the role that Morgan Freeman portrayed in Kiss The Girls and Along Came The Spider. This latest adaptation also stars Matthew Fox, John C McGinley, Edward Burns and Rachel Nichols. The film is a reboot and goes back to the younger days of Alex Cross and involves a case where a family member is murdered by a sadist killer (Fox) who likes to torture his victims.

Yeah I don’t believe him as an action man. This looks like your standard cop action movie which means very generic with nothing new to show you and extremely predictable. I’m glad this isn’t a written/directed/starring Perry movie and just one that he stars in because then it would really have been terrible. I watched Freeman’s Kiss The Girls and Along Came A Spider and I thought Kiss The Girls was a pretty standard movie but was made better by the great acting from Morgan Freeman (Along Came A Spider was pretty ehh). Freeman’s movies were a lot slower and so there was time for good dialogue and a chance to see killer and detective trade barbs and try to one up each other versus this new version that just looks like they put in a bunch of stunts to hide the fact that their star is a bad actor.

This new adaptation originally was given to Idris Elba until the film changed writers and directors and so they decided that what the project was missing was Tyler Perry. Lol. Can you imagine what it could have been with the first writer and Elba on board? Probably not what it looks like now but I will still give this movie a chance because I like all the supporting cast and they are actually pretty good at their jobs. Alex Cross opens everywhere October 19, 2012.

So sad. Sleepless in Seattle and When Harry Met Sally are  my fave movies from her.

Brave Review

Brave is the new Pixar film about Merida (Kelly Macdonald), the impetuous daughter of King Fergus (Billy Connolly) and Queen Elinor (Emma Thompson) who is determined to carve her own path in life. Merida defies an age-old custom sacred to the lords of the land, which inadvertently unleash chaos and fury in the kingdom. She then turns to a crazy old Witch (Julie Walters) for help and is granted an ill-fated wish. The consequences of her wish force Merida to discover the meaning of true bravery to undo a beastly curse before it’s too late.

This movie is so cute. I really enjoyed watching it. I have a thing for female red heads. I don’t know what it is from Julianne Moore, and Julia Roberts, to Emma Stone (she’s blond now but she’ll be back to red), I just love them. And so when I saw Merida with that wild mess of red hair, I knew I would love her. I didn’t really know what to expect from the movie. The first half of it is a little misleading. It’s all about Merida and her parents trying to marry her off, but in the second of it gets to the real heart of the movie which is this mother/daughter relationship. It’s just really great to watch. I even shed a little tear towards the end. I think its great for everyone to see. Granted is it the best Pixar movie? No, but it’s still a great story with lovely characters. Check out Brave in theaters now.
