Immortals (2011)

Immortals is a film loosely based on the Greek myths of Theseus, Minotaur and the War of the Titans. The film stars Mikey Rourke as King Hyperion goes to war and searches for the Epirus Bow, a weapon that will free the Titans and have them take revenge against the gods. It’s all up to Theseus played by Henry Cavill, who will be playing the new Superman in the movie Man of Steel. Theseus is chosen by Zeus and while accompanied by an oracle (Frieda Pinto) and some other sidekicks, he must rally the people and take down Hyperion. I never saw 300 so when the poster and trailers for this movie say 2 of the producers from that movie produced this movie all that makes me think is hard abs that can only be seen on the cover of Men’s Health magazine and that’s exactly what this movie is. I love Greek Mythology. Love the stories and all the myths. I’ve read The Iliad and The Odyssey too many times. I wasn’t expecting much from this movie. In fact I thought it was going to be terrible. Turned out it wasn’t. The plot was so lacking, there is no suspense, no real storytelling going on and the acting was sub par at best but the visual was great. It kept you mesmerized long enough where you forgot that all those other terrible things were happening and just when you started to remember they brought in the visuals again. The action was great. I was enthralled the entire time. This movie isn’t a masterpiece by any means necessary but it was entertaining and I enjoyed myself plus there was lots of eye candy 😉

21 Jump Street Trailer Gets Released

21 Jump Street, the show that ran from 1987 – 1991 and launched the careers of Johnny Depp and Holly Robinson Peete has gotten a face lift and is moving to the big screen.  The trailer was released last week and stars Channing Tatum (Step Up, She’s The Man, GI Joe), Jonah Hill (Super Bad, MoneyBall), Ice Cube (Friday), and Brie Larson (U.S of Tara). I wasn’t in the country during the show’s run (I was also 2 years old when it started) but I caught it in syndication during the mid 90’s and loved it. The premise of the show was cops went undercover in highschool. Yes this sounds ridiculous and so unbelievable because all the actors were way above high school age and would never pass as one, but it was a fun show. This was my first experience with Johnny Depp. He was great not the actor he is today but you can see his potential in the show. Depp has said himself that he didn’t enjoy his time on the show but it’s clear that he knows this was his big break and that’s why he’s makes a cameo in the new movie. Holly Robinson Peete also makes a cameo in the new movie. I don’t know how they came up with this new cast though because the only person that could pass for a high schooler is Brie Larson. The trailer looks like your standard action movie and it should be entertaining and a good time just like the tv series was. Plus there will be lots of man candy with Tatum there.

Martha Marcy May Marlene

Elizabeth Olsen stars as Martha, a young lady that escapes from an abusive cult led by a charismatic leader Patrick (John Hawkes;Winter’s Bone, Contagion). After being missing for sometime, she returns home and tries to assimilate back into her family. She begins to have a difficult time when she becomes haunted by the memories of her time with the cult and becomes increasingly paranoid with the belief that the cult is watching her every move. I saw this movie at a screening on Wednesday and it is great. Elizabeth Olsen has definitely arrived. She got the acting gene in the family. The cast was great. I love John Hawkes. I liked him in last year’s Winter’s Bone and he is just as good in this movie. The movie is a little slow but it builds and builds until when you get to the end all you want is more because you got sucked in so much. It’s a really haunting story and will stay with you after you see it because of how it ends and will have you thinking about what happened to Martha’s character and just how strongly people can be brainwashed and what the impact of group think can do.

Martha Marcy May Marlene now playing everywhere

In Time

In Time stars Justin Timberlake and Amanda Seyfried in a movie set in the future, where people stop again at the age of 25 and in order to stop overpopulating the earth, people are genetically engineered to live for one more year after 25. With this system, time becomes the new currency with the wealthy being able to live forever and the poor having to beg, borrow and steal to make it though the day. Timberlake plays Will Salas, who finds himself accused of murder and on the run with a hostage, whose connection becomes important in the fight against the system. The premise of this movie with time becoming currency and people not aging had the potential to be a really good movie. I really had high hopes for Justin. I thought maybe this movie would be his big movie. It had such potential and completely blew it. Ok maybe not completely but man the movie was not good. The dialogue was bad and there were so many awkward pauses in the dialogue. It just made no sense. You would think that with some of the people in this cast (Cillian Murphy, Matt Bomer, Vincent Kartheiser) and the person who directed it (Andrew Niccol; Truman Show) that this would be at least a B- movie but sadly it was more like a D/C-. Timberlake’s last movie, Bad Teacher was almost as bad as this one. I think it might be time for Justin to get back to music full-time. Hollywood has given him enough movies to show that he can carry a movie and he has disappointed. He is hilarious when he does SNL or small smaller roles but he can’t carry a movie and should stop trying. Get back to making me a new album Justin.

Throwback: Lindsay Lohan

Lindsay Lohan has finally gotten a job. No not an acting job no one pays her to do that anymore. Playboy is going to be paying her almost $1 million to pose for their magazine. This sounds like an amazing career move. I mean this is what the greats do when they are as talented as she is. She also is heading back to court for violating parole by not doing community service hours she was assigned. So in honor of all Lindsay’s recent trouble and new job, I want to look back at some of the hits from the career of the 25 yr old that started so promising and has taken the turn for the absolute worse. Kim Kardashian Cast in New Tyler Perry Movie

So Tyler Perry might have just found a way to make me not watch another one of his movies. He has just cast Kim Kardashian in next film The Marriage Counselor. The movie is based on one of Perry’s stage plays about a marriage counselor  whose marriage begins to fall apart when her in-laws move in. She then begins to cheat on her husband (because that is going to save that marriage), and her co-worker takes her to the big city to get a makeover. The marriage counselor will be played by Jurnee Smollett and the co-worker will be Kardashian’s character. First of all the plot for this movie sounds awful. Seriously Tyler Perry? WTF. So she’s a marriage counselor who cheats on her husband and then her co-worker gets her a makeover? Ridiculous. Second of all this role sounds like it’s a pretty big one in the movie. I’m not even gonna fake and say I don’t watch The Kardashians, I do. I watch all of them, even all the spin-offs. I’m fascinated by Kris Jenner’s pimp game because the way she hustles for her kids is AMAZING. That being said, I don’t want to watch them in a movie. They are reality tv stars and I think they need to just stay where they are. Maybe do some bit parts here and there or cameos but serious acting? No. This movie just sounds awful from beginning to end and I’m really sad that Jurnee Smollett is in this because she is definitely better than this mess. That being said I’ll be seeing this movie at a free screening, then again maybe not because Perry tends to not pre-screen his movies for critics. If that’s the case, then someone will have to let me know how it is.

Puss In Boots

Puss In Boots is a prequel to the Shrek series.  We met Puss in the second Shrek movie and he has  become a staple in the franchise.  So much so that he got his own movie.  The movie is about the life and adventures of Puss before we met him in Shrek 2. The adventure is one he goes on with his childhood best friend, Humpty Dumpty and Kitty Softpaws in an attempt to steal the Golden Goose that lays golden eggs from notorious outlaws, Jack and Jill. I saw this yesterday at a pre-screening and it was good. There wasn’t anything particularly wonderful about this movie. It was like all the other Shrek movies, with stuff for kids and just enough sexual innuendo and jokes that go over the kids heads but keep the adults that have to take their kids to the movies entertained. The 3D was useless as it has become lately. Definitely not needed. I would say go see this but go to a morning or matinee show. I would definitely not pay after 5pm or 3D prices for it.

Fall Movies I Can’t Wait For

Fall is here!!! Leaves are falling, the weather is cooler, the boots and jackets have started to come out.Ok it’s been here for a while now but I’ve been so obsessed with tv lately that I forgot all about the movies that are coming this fall that I want to see.

This movie looks so good. From the trailer alone it looks like the cast is great, the story is intriguing and its going to definitely be an Oscar contender.

Footloose

Footloose is another wonderful remake that Hollywood is blessing us with this year.  It stars former Justin Timberlake back up dancer Kenny Wormald and former Dancing With the Stars pro Julianne Hough. The movie is about a kid from Boston (Kenny Wormald) who moves to a small town in Georgia called Bomont, where loud music and dancing has been outlawed. He comes and rebels against the town authority and tries to gain his right to dance. Hahahahahahah omg I just burst out laughing typing that last sentence. The movie sounds so ridiculous and it is. I can’t say if this version was better than the 1984 original with Kevin Bacon because I barely remember it but I’m sure the original was better because what I watched was awful. The acting, the dancing ughh AWFUL. My gosh why is Julianne Hough trying to be an actress. She’s not good. There were supposed to be some tearful and emotional scenes happening and she couldn’t even cry in them. I mean I just think if you are going to be an actress, one of the basic skills you have to master is crying when the scene calls for it. I mean use an onion  to get the tears going or something. Even if Hough could master that she still wouldn’t be a good actress. Dennis Quaid also stars in the movie playing Julianne Hough’s preacher father and the main reason dancing is banned from Bomont. I have been reading the reviews for this movie and they are all saying how great and wonderful it is and I just don’t get it at all. At first I thought well maybe I need to watch it again to see if I am wrong but I just can’t see putting myself through that torture for a second time so my original opinion stays. DON’T WASTE YOUR MONEY!! If you do want to see for yourself, Footloose hits theaters Friday 10/14.

Ides Of March

George Clooney’s 4th directorial effort brings him together with “it” guy of the year,Ryan Gosling. The political thriller also stars Phillip Seymour Hoffman,Marissa Tomei,Paul Giamatti and Evan Rachel Wood. The movie is about the last days of a Ohio democratic presidential primary.Ryan Gosling plays Stephen Myers,a junior campaign manager for Mike Morris (George Clooney) who inadvertently gets involved in a political scandal that threatens his candidate’s chances for president. This movie was a good one.Clooney is a pretty good director. All his movies have the same sort of feel to them and they become recognizable when you have watched a couple. This one reminds me of one of his other movies, Good Night, and Good Luck.Ides wasn’t anything groundbreaking or whatever but it was a solid movie. The acting was good, story was done well,I would recommend it.We all know politics is shady but the movie just kind of made you sad to see just how shady it is and how someone can go into it innocent and with idealistic beliefs and end up having to sell their soul. The question is just how much of your soul are you willing to sell?Ides of March is in theaters now.
