Best Moments From The Golden Globe Awards

After what seemed like the longest 3 hours of my life, the Golden Globes are finally over. The event which was hosted by the hilarious (he wasn’t tonight) Ricky Gervais and the show was a true mixed bag of moments but overall it was pretty underwhelming.  The awards that were handed out had some surprise wins like Kelsey Grammer winning the Best Actor Drama category or the fine fine Idris Elba winning the Best Actor TV movie/Miniseries category. The Descendants and The Artist were the big winners of the night with

Here are some of the best moments from last.

Ricky Gervais Calls Out Johnny Depp.

This was pretty hilarious. Johnny Depp was presenting the first award and in introducing him Gervais continued his bit from last year about how terrible the movie The Tourist was by asking him if “He’d seen The Tourist himself?” Depp admitted that he hadn’t which Ricky used as confirmation that the movie was awful.

Jimmy Fallon Doing His Own Moves Like Jagger

Jimmy Fallon making fun of Adam Levin and his band Maroon 5’s hit Moves Like Jagger. He then proceeded to try to show Adam his own Jagger moves. It was pretty hilarious.

Michelle Williams Gives A Really Sweet Speech After Her Win For Best Actress in A Comedy/Musical

“I consider myself a mother first and an actress second. So the person I most want to thank is my daughter, my little girl, whose bravery and exuberance is the example that I take with me in my work and in my life,” said Michelle Williams as she accepted her award for Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical for My Week With Marilyn. She dedicated the award to her daughter and thanked many people including her BFF, Busy Phillips (Cougar Town). I love the Dawson’s Creek love and that they have been friends for so long. I also love that I got to see Phillips since ABC decided to not have my show Cougar Town on the air right now. Here is the speech in its entirety.

Modern Family Acceptance Speech By Sofia Vergara

Modern Family finally won the award for best comedy after 2 years of losing to Glee. The entire cast made their way on stage and Vergara and creator Steve Levitan decides that since they are an international show they should do their speech in two languages.

Elton John’s Sourpuss Face When Madonna Won For Best Original Song

There is definitely no love lost between Elton John and Madonna. They have been feuding ever since Madonna won an award for best live act and Elton responded with “Madonna, best f–king live act? F–k off!” Elton was already in a fighting mood during the red carpet show with Carson Daly when he said that Madonna had no chance of winning the award that night. Madonna responded with “may the best man win”

Elton’s husband, David Furnish, was rather pissed after the loss and went off on his Facebook page saying, “Madonna. Best song???? F–k off!!! Thank you for all your comments and support. Madonna winning Best Original Song truly shows how these awards have nothing to do with merit. Her acceptance speech was embarrassing in its narcissism. And her criticism of Gaga shows how desperate she really is.”

Furnish’s reference to Lady Gaga, godmother to their child,  is from a jab Madonna made at her in an interview with ABC News this past week where she implied that Gaga ripped off her work.

I see why they hate Madonna because she is such a rhymes with itch. But they come off looking like such sore losers in this whole thing.

That’s about it. There was a great moment with Meryl Streep when she went up to accept her award for Best Actress in a Drama for The Iron Lady but all moments with Meryl are wonderful so I didn’t put that up here. For a complete list of the winners, check out the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. Next up SAG Awards.

Pariah (2011)

On the surface, this movie looks like a typical coming of age/coming out story but when you look more into it, you see that it is a lot than that simple story. Pariah is the story of Alike; played by newcomer Adepero Oduye; a seventeen year old African-American high school student who has accepted the fact that she is a lesbian but now struggles with coming out to her very religious mother and the father that she adores. The story is set in Brooklyn, NY and might look a little like 2009’s Precious but this is as far as the similarities between the two films go. The movie also stars Kim Wayans (In Living Color, Juwanna Mann) playing Alike’s uber religious mother.

As Alike lives her life as an in the closet lesbian, she goes through many of the growing pains we all face as teenagers from the crushes, to the first kiss and the vulnerability we experience around someone we like.  This movie could have easily gone into showing the cliched stereotypes of African Americans like poverty, broken homes and abuse but this one showed a middle class family that while not perfect was still very much intact and also showed a girl that was strong, smart and confident in her own way. I think it’s very refreshing to see.

Alike’s struggle really resonated with me because I have also felt like I was hiding a part of myself from family. So when the film ended with Alike getting her freedom, I was kind of affected by that and shed one lone tear (I’m a G, I don’t cry at movies lol). It was just very touching.

Pariah is rated R and in theaters now.

Awkward Black Girl Season Finale – “The Decision”

After an almost riot by ABG fans on Facebook and Twitter for the one day delay on the episode, Issa Rae premiered the season finale today. The episode is the longest one yet, clocking at 25 minutes and is definitely worth the wait. Check it out.   Spoilers ahead.

Premieres and Returns For Thursday 1/12/12

More premieres and returns tonight. NBC Thursday night comedies are back, well most of them (sorry Community fans), as well as CBS’ Thursday lineup. Also, VH1 has the Critics’ Choice awards. Soo much to watch and these are just the premieres.

8/7c

Big Bang Theory (CBS) – Winter return. Sheldon gets in trouble with Amy when he isn’t impressed by her recent accomplishment, and Howard must come to grips with Bernadette’s dislike of children.

30 Rock (NBC) – Season Premiere. Love this show. It got pushed up to mid-season because of Tina Fey’s pregnancy but thank goodness its back. Too bad its at the expense of Community. Tonight’s premiere finds that as everyone is returning from the holiday break, NBC’s new talent competition, “America’s Kidz Got Singing”, is a hit, but Jenna’s role as the judge everyone loves to hate causes Jack to question the show’s family value. Much to his chagrin, Tracy’s usual antics fail to aggravate Liz, while Kenneth takes the day off to do his dream chores as he awaits the Rapture.

Critics’ Choice Movie Awards (VH1) – It’s the first big award show on the road to the Oscars. Plenty of stars will be in attendance and the fashion will be AMAZING as it usually is at these things. For the list of nominees, check out the Critics’ Choice website.

8:30/7:30c

Parks & Recreation (NBC) – Winter return. Another show that is absolutely hilarious. I finally got to the end of season 1 and it seriously hilarious. Gotta catch up to the current season. On tonight’s episode, Leslie enlists everyone’s help in staging an attention-getting event. Ben explores a new hobby, while April and Andy adopt a pet.

Rob! (CBS) – Series Premiere. This show stars Rob Schneider and that should just about tell you all you need to know about this show. It looks awful. Almost as awful as the ABC show, Work It. Rob plays a guy who use to be a confirmed bachelor, but just recently married into a tight knit Mexican family. Here is a clip.

9/8c

The Finder (FOX) – Series Premiere. This is a spin-off from the show Bones. It stars Geoff Stults (7th Heaven, October Road) as Walter, an investigator who uses his  gift of finding things (get it The Finder) to help others recover what they’ve lost.  Michael Clarke Duncan(The Green Mile, Talladega Nights) also stars as Walter’s lawyer. Here is a clip.

The Office (NBC) – Winter return. This show has been very hit or miss this season after Steve Carell’s departure. Mostly miss and I’m just hoping the they find their footing soon. On tonight’s episode, Oscar joins a trivia night contest, Andy decides to get the whole office involved. Meanwhile, Dwight visits Sabre headquarters to explore other job opportunities.

Person Of Interest (CBS) – Winter return. This show started off slow but it really picked up half way through the fall. They also put Taraji P. Henson in a lot more episodes so that also made the show even better. Tonight’s episode has Reese working the computer while Finch does the legwork with their latest POI, a building super who keeps too close an eye on his tenants. Meanwhile, Detective Carter may finally get her long-awaited glimpse into a case.

9:30/8:30c

Up All Night (NBC) – Winter return. This show is hilarious. I thought it was ok when it started but it got better as the season went on. On tonight’s episode, Regan’s competitive streak surfaces during a New Year’s Eve game night, much to Chris’ chagrin. Meanwhile, Kevin suspects that Ava may be ashamed of him; and Missy shows up with a surprising date.

10/9c

The Mentalist (CBS) – Winter return. Jane and the CBI team narrow down the long list of suspects after a high-end divorce attorney, with many enemies, is killed on his speed boat. Meanwhile, Jane is questioned by Agent Darcy about whether Red John was responsible for Panzer’s murder.

Show Premieres and Returns for Wednesday 1/11/12

Lots premiering tonight. Many NBC shows are back as well as an award show and a couple of big dramas.

8/7c

One Tree Hill (CW) – Final Season Premiere. Haven’t really watched this show since Chad Michael Murray and Hilary Burton left but it was one of my guilty pleasures. Only a hand full of people knew I watched this show. Anyway this is the premiere of the ninth and final season of this show. So fans of this show get to watching. There are only going to be 13 episodes this season.

Whitney (NBC) – Winter return. New time slot. Many people hate this show. I don’t hate it but I don’t like it either. I don’t know why I watch this show because it really isn’t funny at all but I like Whitney Cummings and feel like I should support lol.

8:30/7:30c

Are You There, Chelsea? (NBC) – Series Premiere. I love Chelsea Handler and love the book this show is based on. That being said I don’t know how well this show is going to. Laura Prepon (That 70’s Show) plays a 20 something year old Chelsea Handler, while Handler herself plays her older sister, Sloane.

9/8c

The People’s Choice Awards (CBS) – The Big Bang Theory‘s Kaley Cuoco is the host for the night for this awards show which like its name says is voted on by the people or 13 year old children.

Harry’s Law (NBC) – Winter return. This show is an ok show. I like some of the cast members but it just seemed really boring so I stopped watching last season. Tonight’s episode has Adam and Cassie represent a troubled woman who exacts vigilante justice against men who abuse women by dressing up as Wonder Woman.

10/9c

Face Off (SyFy) – Season Premiere. Never watched this show before but I just discovered that such a show exist. I shouldn’t be surprised. There is a reality show for pretty much everything. This show has a bunch of prosthetic makeup artists compete to create prosthesis like those found in horror and sci-fi movies. The challenge for this episode is to re-imagine the characters from the movie, The Wizard of Oz.

The Challenge: Battle of The Exes Special (MTV) – YES!!!!!!!! I hate Real World now but I LOVE me a challenge. This time kind of like they did with Rivals at the last challenge, they have put exes together that were either serious relationship or just a hookup. There are some people on here that are pushing 40 now and were on the Real World and Road Rules in the late 90s and early 00s but I mean I wouldn’t work if I had no discernible talent and MTV kept sending me on paid vacations to exotic locales and giving me a bunch of money and prizes.

Law and Order: SVU (NBC) – Winter return. I haven’t watched at all this season. I just can’t get over the fact that Stabler (Chris Meloni) isn’t there anymore. I’ll catch it at some point. USA runs marathons of this show all the time. Tonight’s episode, the team tries to investigate the rape of an actress in an interactive theater production that happened on stage, that the audience believes is part of the show. They hit a dead-end in their investigation when they learn the show’s director gave the audience — including the assailant — masks to wear during the performance.

Premieres and Returns For Tuesday 1/10/12

Lots of reality returns tonight as most scripted shows returned last week. Here’s what’s returns and premieres tonight.

9/8c

Dance Moms (Lifetime) – Season Premiere. I watched an episode of this show because I was forced to by a friend who is obsessed with it. It was of course a train wreck in the same vein of Toddlers and Tiaras. So if you like Toddlers and Tiaras, we can no longer be friends but you will also enjoy this show.

10/9c

The Game (BET) – Season Premiere. Brittany Daniels (Kelly Pitts) is out and Brandy Norwood is in as Chardonnay (could this not be a more ghetto name, then again this is what this show has become on BET) who gets into a romantic entanglement with Jason Pitts (Coby Bell). I watched the show while it was on the CW and was happy that it got saved but not that it got saved by BET. It has gotten so bad. The characters are former shells of themselves and the writing is TERRIBLE. It reminds me of the even WORSE show Single Ladies that airs on VH1.

Tabitha’s Takeover (BRAVO) – Season Premiere. I love some Tabitha Coffey. This season she’s not only taking over salons, but restaurants, boutiques, etc. Yes! More ways for her to get even snarkier.

11/10c

Let’s Stay Together (BET) – Season Premiere. Season 2 opens and picks up with dramas surrounding Charles’ and Stacy’s wedding. Here, Charles escapes from an elevator and attempts to head home. Meanwhile, Troy arrives at Tasha’s house, upsetting Jamal. I don’t know anything about these characters. All I know is I watched the pilot, it was terrible and I gave it a pass.

YES!!!!!! Castle Is Back Tonight

I love this show. And it has only gotten better and better since the first season.  Season 4 has just been amazing. Great cast, great cases, great stories. I thought maybe the fact that Ruben Santiago-Hudson (Captain Montgomery) died last season and a new captain (Penny Johnson Jerald, 24) was brought in was going to change things. It hasn’t though and Jerald has folded really well into the cast and has made me not hate her like I thought I would. In tonight’s episode, it’s Ryan is getting married when a murder threatens to derail the couple’s plans. Maybe this wedding will spark a little something for Castle and Beckett because I need them to hurry up and just get together. Sneak peak of tonight’s episode below, which airs on ABC at 10/9c.

Shows Premieres and Returns for Sunday 1/8

Some shows came back this past week while the bulk of them will be returning this week. Here are the shows returning with new episodes and what’s premiering today Sunday, January 8, 2012.

8/7c

Once Upon A Time (ABC)  – Winter return. Everyone deals with the aftermath of Sheriff Graham’s death.

The Simpsons (FOX) – Winter return. When Homer lands his own cable news program, he endorses right-wing rock star Ted Nugent (guest voicing as himself) for President of the United States.

9/8c

Shameless (Showtime) – Season 2 Premiere. Yay this show is back. Season 1 started off kinda slow and I wasn’t sure I would like it but then it got good. Emmy Rossum (Phantom of The Opera) and William H. Macy (Lincoln Lawyer) are so great on this show. It picks up from where season 1 ended with Fiona (Rossum) moving on from Steve to a new guy, all while trying to take care of her siblings while their father, Frank (Macy) is up to his usual bingeing and just being a bum and mooch in general.

The Firm (NBC) – Series Premiere. This show is one of that I’m looking forward to. I love Josh Lucas. I have a soft spot for him from Sweet Home Alabama. Hopefully this will be good. I liked this book and the movie was pretty good so hopefully  NBC has come up with a hit.

Downton Abbey (PBS) – Season Premiere. The British series returns with England on the brink of war and the men of the house facing decisions about whether to fight for their country.

The Good Wife (CBS) – Winter return. YES!!!! It’s back. Can’t wait to see what is in store for everyone for the rest of the season. On tonight’s episode Lockhart & Gardner’s future is at stake when a couple whose divorce was overseen by the firm accuses them of encouraging the breakup for financial gain.

Desperate House Wives (ABC) – Winter return. Haven’t watched this show for about a season or two. Not sure if it’s any good still but many love it and it’s back and moving along towards the series finale in May.

Family Guy (FOX) – Winter return. Meg Griffin finally turns 18 with a surprise party that no one shows up to (poor Meg!).  Quagmire finds out about the monumental event, decides it’s finally time to make his move.

The Real Housewives of Atlanta (BRAVO) – Winter return. Peter and Cynthia are heading to counseling for their marital problems, NeNe and Marlo get together to clear the air about Charles. Phaedra drags Apollo to the funeral home to discuss the new business and Kandi has her first sessions in the studio with country singer, Jo Dee Messina.

10/9c

Pan Am (ABC) – Winter return. Fate deals a blow to Dean and Colette’s budding romance; Maggie falls hard for her congressman after slamming him in the Village Voice; Kate is haunted by her last spy mission. This show is ok. I can take it or leave it.

CSI: Miami (CBS) – Winter return. Horatio’s team deals with the most unique weapon they have ever seen.

Absolutely Fabulous (BBC America) – 20th Anniversary special. This is the first of three new episodes, someone who’s been “away” for a while returns to the Monsoon abode and with a new and slightly scary best friend; Bubble reminisces about the Royal Wedding.

House of Lies (Showtime) – Series Premiere. Don Cheadle (Ocean’s Eleven) in this new Showtime comedy as Marty Kaan, a management consultant who is juggling existing and prospective clients, a psycho/sex-crazed ex-wife and other assorted domestic issues. Kristen Bell (Veronica Mars), Ben Schwartz (Parks and Recreation) make up  Marty’s team, while Richard Schiff (The West Wing) plays their boss. This has a good cast and Showtime usually has some great shows so hopefully this will be another .

Californication (Showtime) 10:30/9:30c  – Season Premiere. This season picks up a few years later, with Hank now looking to bolt New York after dumping another girlfriend. There he is offered a deal to write a movie. New people on this season are Meagan Good (Stomp the Yard), RZA (Wu-Tang Clan), and Scott Michael Foster (Greek).

11/10c

Watch What Happens L!ve (BRAVO) – Season Premiere. Andy Cohen is back with his fun talk show, where he partakes in various libations with many different guests. Tonight’s show is the beginning of the show being expanded to 5 nights a week.  The guest for tonight will be Atlanta housewife, Kandi Burruss and The Roots, Questlove.

What will you be watching tonight??

I Watched So That You Don’t Have To: The Devil Inside

The Devil Inside is the latest take on the faux-documentary style horror film. Taking a page out of the movie that started it all, The Blair Witch Project, it proceeds to use every single tired cliché you can think of when it comes to the horror documentary and exorcism movies.

The story is about a woman who killed three people while an exorcism was being performed on her. She is institutionalized after being seen as not guilty by reason of insanity. The movie then cuts to 20 years later where her daughter with the help of a documentary filmmaker goes to find out if her mother is just mentally ill or demonically possessed. She gets two priests to do a couple of exorcisms that are unauthorized by the church. From there everything goes horribly wrong, and the only piece of evidence is the footage that was caught by the filmmaker.

The best thing about this movie is that it is only an hour 15 minutes long. I saw this movie for free and I want my money back. The scariest parts of the movie were in the trailer and even then those weren’t scary. I expected this because I really haven’t been scared by a movie since… I don’t know, but it’s been a while. It’s also pretty predictable as pretty much when the beginning when they mention something about an aspect of the exorcism tells you exactly what is going to happen to everyone.

The group I was with for the screening walked out laughing and talking about what a trash movie that was. We also determined that the movie was worse than what I thought was almost the worst movie of the 2011, The Darkest Hour. The worst. Honestly save your money people and if you really want to watch a movie this weekend go watch Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. And if you are a glutton for punishment, the film is in theaters today.
