Happy Holidays everyone. It’s the time of year when families have holiday decorations out and the temperature drops a little too much for my liking. It’s also the time of year when there is nothing on TV and all your favorite shows take a winter hiatus (Perfect time to catch up on stuff you haven’t seen). On the bright side, many shows are returning from hiatus or premiering as early as the first day of the new year. With that being said, I have put together a nice little guide to all the return and premiere dates of your favorite shows and soon to be favorites. The guide is will be updated when new dates are announced so be sure to come back and check on your show if it’s not there.
ABC went into its upfront presentation today in the same place it has been for the last couple of years, in fourth place. While their percentage of viewer decline has been way less than that of the other networks, they still can’t catch a break as all their new dramas and comedies have failed terribly and not even Shonda Rhimes can save them. Their biggest problems are Tuesdays, Thursdays at 8 pm and Sundays at 11 pm and it doesn’t really seem like they tried to change much on the schedule. The biggest change occurs on Tuesday and Thursday. They moved their comedy block an hour earlier on Tuesdays to start the night off. That’s good as it won’t have to go up against FOX’s comedy hour at 9 pm. They moved The Goldbergs to the time slot it should have been in from the beginning, after The Middle. Maybe if they had done that last fall, along with giving Trophy Wife the post Modern Family slot, that show wouldn’t have sunk the way it did. Yes, I’m a little bitter. See here and here. They have also done what I figured they were going to on Thursdays and just made it a Shonda Rhimes night of television. Moving Grey’s Anatomy to 8 pm is definitely going to be a huge challenge as it will be going up against the highest rated comedy on television, The Big Bang Theory. That show could put a huge dent into the ratings of ABC’s highest rated drama. They also moved Scandal to the 9 pm hour which I think would have worked except NBC will be moving The Blacklist to that time slot making it a very competitive hour. For Sunday they finally did what they should have done two years ago, which was move Revenge back to it’s 10 pm time slot. Check out all of these changes in the new Fall 2014 schedule. The 85th annual Academy Awards have come to past and Ellen Degeneres, on her 2nd go as host did a good job in moving the long ceremony (clocking in at a final run time of 3 1/2 hours) along. The Academy spread the love all around everyone getting a little piece of the pie. Gravity won 7 awards including Best Director for Alfonso Cuaron. 12 Years A Slave received 3 awards including the biggest prize of the night, Best Picture. There were so many other great moments at the awards from Lupita Nyong’o winning and giving that amazing acceptance speech to the selfie that broke Twitter and John Travolta having a stroke and completely butchering Idina Menzel’s name. You can find all of those moments on Indiewire and TVline. See the full list of winners below. Continue reading Oscars 2014→
The best comedy of the fall is………. Trophy Wife. What? Trophy Wife, really? Yes, this is the best new comedy that no one is watching. I would put it up there as one of the top comedies on television right now.
Trophy Wife is a show about a newlywed couple, played by Malin Akerman (Rock of Ages, Wanderlust, Children’s Hospital) and Bradley Whitford (West Wing, Cabin In The Woods). The series delves into their daily lives dealing with his two ex-wives, Marcia Gay Harden (The Newsroom, Mystic River) and Michaela Watson (Saturday Night Live, Afternoon Delight, Wanderlust) and the three children from his previous marriages. Fall première dates are coming up and there are too many things to watch. No worries. It was extremely difficult but I have narrowed it down to the 5 shows that you must watch.
1. Brooklyn Nine-Nine (FOX) Premieres Tuesday, September 17 @8:30/7:30c.
I have a thing for André Braugher (Men Of A Certain Age, Gideon’s Crossing). I think he’s absolutely wonderful. So when I saw that this show got picked up by Fox, I was excited. The show is a comedy about is about how members of a Brooklyn squad deal with a new very straight-laced and tightly wound police chief played by Braugher. The comedy for most of the show comes from the interplay between Braugher and the squad’s lead cop, played by Andy Samberg (Saturday Night Live), who just can’t seem to adjust. This show looks hilarious and I have read nothing but good things about it. Samberg had many great moments on SNL so he will bring the funny. I just really want them to let Braugher be great. I need him to be on a show that people give a chance. Hopefully this one is it.
2. The Michael J Fox Show (NBC) Premieres Thursday, September 26 @9/8c.
Michael J. Fox hasn’t been the star of a show since he left Spin City in 2000 because of his Parkinson’s disease. He has done a lot of guest stints on different shows since then; my favorite being his arcs on The Good Wife. It’s nice that now he is returning to television full-time and in something that is really good at, comedy. The new show emulates the actor’s life a bit in that it is about a news anchor at the top of his game who decided to leave his job to spend more time with his family. After being at home for 5 years, his family is ready for him to leave the house and return to work. The cast also includes Betsy Brandt (Breaking Bad) and Wendell Pierce (The Wire, Treme, Suits). I saw part of this pilot in one of my classes last semester and I really liked it so I can’t wait to see the finished product.
The music on Nashville is one of the best parts of that show. I actually both the music that was on every single episode. Soooo good. I love that the show has turned a lot of people on to country music.
YESSSSS A real promo for Scandal season 3 got released today on Entertainment Weekly. Ohhh It’s gonna be good. Season 3 of Scandal premieres on ABC Thursday, October 3rd.
