Rock of Ages

image

Rock of Ages is a film based on the hit Broadway musical about a small town girl Sherrie, played by Julianne Hough (Footloose) and city boy Drew (Diego Boneta; 90210), who meet on the Sunset Strip while pursuing their Hollywood dreams. Their rock ‘n’ roll romance is told through the heart-pounding hits of Def Leppard, Joan Jett, Journey, Foreigner, Bon Jovi, Night Ranger, REO Speedwagon, Pat Benatar, Twisted Sister, Poison, Whitesnake and many other 80’s hits.

When I saw the trailer for this movie, I thought this was going to be a disaster. It just looked a mess. So I was definitely going into this with lowered expectations. To my surprise, I actually enjoyed myself. I’m a big 80’s hair metal fan so I just had a wonderful time singing along and dancing to all those hits. The acting wasn’t anything to rave about but some people were clearly better than others. Tom Cruise really went for it with his role here as Stacy Jaxx. He played the part as a mix of Axl Rose and Mr. Rock of Love himself, Brett Michaels. He has definitely won me back with this movie and Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol. Mary J. Blige should keep her day job and Julianne Hough just needs to disappear (although she was better in this movie). If you don’t take this movie too seriously, you will be able to enjoy yourself and have a good time. Check out Rock of Ages in theaters this Friday.

Awkward Black Girl: Countdown to Season 2 **5 DAYS AWAY**

The countdown to the Awkward Black Girl season 2 premiere is on. The show premieres this Thursday, June 14th and to celebrate I am going to countdown my top 5 episodes of season 1 everyday until the season 2 premiere.

#5 – The Stop Sign

The Stop Sign is the first episode of the series and it set the tone for the rest of the season. I love this episode because while not perfect, it shows the potential of the series. It’s also just plain hilarious. There were so many things in this episode that made me cringe and laugh like “Booty Shorts”, fake phone calls , “A”, the lyrics “yes you deserve to die and I hope you burn in hell” (I don’t know why that one especially tickles me).

Stop by tomorrow to see what #4 will be.

New Show Alert: ABC Family’s Bunheads

image

Bunheads is a new show coming to ABC Family from the creator of Gilmore Girls, Amy Sherman-Palladino. The show centers on Michelle (Tony award winner Sutton Foster), a Las Vegas showgirl who impulsively gets married, moves to her new husband’s small hometown, and takes a teaching position at her new mother-in-law’s (Kelly Bishop) dance school.

I watched the pilot and I was in within the first 15 mins. It’s so fantastic. I fell in love instantly. The way the episode ends completely hooked me for the rest of the season. I just want to know what happens now. I was a huge fan of Gilmore Girls so I’ll watch anything from Palladino. The writing here is just as fun and witty as Gilmore and the acting is pretty good. Kelly Bishop, who played the mother and grandmother of the Loreleis, plays the mother in law to Sutton Foster’s Michelle.

Bunheads premieres on ABC Family Monday, June 11th at 9/8c.

New Trailer: Django Unchained

Yessssss!!! The first teaser trailer for Quentin Tarantino’s upcoming film, Django Unchained was released today. The movie stars Jamie Foxx as Django, a slave whose history with his former owners lands him face-to-face with German-born bounty hunter Dr. King Schultz played by Christoph Waltz (Inglourious Basterds, Water For Elephants). Schultz is on the trail of the Brittle brothers, and only needs Django’s help with a promise to free him upon their capture – dead or alive. Success leads Schultz to free Django, though the two men choose not to go their separate ways. Instead, Schultz seeks out the South’s most wanted criminals with Django by his side. Honing vital hunting skills, Django remains focused on one goal: finding and rescuing Broomhilda (Kerry Washington; Scandal), the wife he lost to the slave trade long ago.

I love Quentin and this movie looks great. He always manages to get the best people in his movies. I usually like all of his movies so this probably won’t be any different. Django Unchained is in theaters this Christmas.

Network Upfronts 2012

I know I’m over 3 weeks late here but…. better late than never right? So upfronts happened and brought about the final nail to the coffins of many shows as well as plenty of renewals for the networks. We also get a preview of what the fall 2012 has in store for us.

Lets’s start with ABC. Their cancelled shows for the 11-12 season were Charlie’s Angels, Desperate Housewives, GCB, Man Up!, Missing, Pan Am, The River and Work It. Renewed shows are Castle, Modern Family, Body of Proof, Cougar Town, Dancing With the Stars, Grey’s Anatomy, Happy Endings, Last Man Standing, Once Upon A Time, Private Practice, Revenge, Suburgatory, The Bachelor, and The Middle.

I’m not really sad about any of the shows that were cancelled here. The only one that I feel they should have given more time to was GCB. Maybe let it run a little more in the summer to catch more of an audience. Their ratings weren’t terrible either so I didn’t really understand that one. As for everything that got renewed YES, YES, YES especially Cougar Town. TBS came in with a last minute save on the show because ABC was definitely going to ax it. So come this fall Cougar Town will no longer air on ABC but on TBS. Continue reading Network Upfronts 2012

Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!! Why would they do this? This makes no sense to me what so ever.

2012 MTV Movie Awards

MTV movie awards are one of the most ridiculous of the many award shows out there, but they are always good for a few laughs. This year was hosted by Russell Brand again because no one else will dothis show.

This pre-show is a hot mess. Kat Graham (The Vampire Diaries) is a hot mess. Seriously Bonnie? What is with this terrible weave and your outfit is not any better. Ugh.  Love the shoes though. Here is a transcription of her interview with Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield. Kat to Emma Stone – “I am here with the lovely Emma Stone and I think there is somebody hiding behind you.” Andrew – “I’m not hiding.” Kat – “You’re not hiding.” Andrew – “No.” Kat – “Oh, he’s just being Spidermanny and stuff.” Awkward laughter from everyone. WTH??

Yes FUN. I love their single “We Are Young.” Such a good song. It makes me think of some Queen songs. YESSSSSSSS they brought Janelle Monae out to do her part of the song. Continue reading 2012 MTV Movie Awards

Snow White & The Huntsman

Snow White & The Huntsman is the new film based on the Brothers Grimm fairy tale. In this adaptation, Kristen Stewart plays, Snow White,  the only person in the land fairer than the evil queen, played by Charlize Theron, who is out to destroy her. But the Huntsman (Chris Hemsworth; Avengers, Thor, Cabin In The Woods) the queen orders to bring Snow White in from the woods to be killed winds up becoming her protector in a quest to vanquish the Evil Queen.

I said before that I was looking forward to this movie mostly because of Charlize and because Kristen Stewart didn’t speak at all. Well I saw the movie this past week and it was pretty ok. On a ratings scale, it would be a B-. Charlize is good as usual. She did her thing with this part and is clearly the best part of this movie. She is also like crazy beautiful. I just kept looking at her was just mesmerized. Chris Hemsworth is also nice to look at. I thought with what he was given, he did a good job. I also liked that they didn’t go into a full-blown love story with the huntsman and Snow White but just provided you with teases of one.

As for Kristen Stewart, I was loving that the trailer was actually pretty true to the movie in that Kristen Stewart didn’t have many lines in the movie. There so many long stretches of dialogue that didn’t include her that I was just trilled. She also was able to emote more at a couple of points something other than the bitch face that she has permanently stuck on.

I would recommend this movie because it has everything a good gothic fantasy movie should: good action, a superb villain and just a hint of a love story. Snow White & The Huntsman is in theaters now.

And This Is Why I Continue To Not Watch VH1’s “Single Ladies”

Single Ladies is a show that airs on VH1 that revolves around the romantic relationships of three friends played by LisaRaye McCoy, Charity Shea, and Denise Vasi. I watched the first episode of this show when it premiered last year and it’s one of the worst shows ever. The writing and acting are just so awfully bad. There are some shows that are bad but somehow justify to yourself a reason to still watch (Top Model, Tough Love, Jersey Shore, etc). This show has none of that. You would think it would be a little decent too since it’s produced by Queen Latifah but nope. Season 2 of the show premiered this past Monday and a friend of mine watched it for some reason and was kind enough to send me his thoughts as he watched the episode.

  • Is it just me, or in order to be on this show, you have to have a bad weave/wig?
  • Horrible/unnatural introductions and backstories:
  • “My aunt used to live next door to her in Inglewood, and I’d stay there every other summer.  Now we’re like sisters.”
    • I mean, can you really be “like sisters” with somebody you see on average 6 weeks a year?
  • “I just got an email from Val.  She’s not coming back from Milan…forever”.
  • Is everybody an effing Tango dancer?!  I mean dang, now they got a brother feeling like he needs to take classes and ish
  • Oh, hello Rick Fox awkwardly interjected into the scene….with his non acting self.  Somehow, they make him seem shorter than he actually is.  I think they make him stand in a hole or something.
  • Great dialogue: “As you’re looking for things, look for a new dance partner.  Because as you know…it takes two to tango!”
  • “Good morning, Single Lady”
  • Oh, and a literal use of the title helps us remember what we’re watching
  • Did they just REALLY pour out some champagne in honor of Stacey Dash?!?
  • What’s up with these hallucinations?
  • Why is this show feeling like a Mexican telanovela?
  • (we’re only at the second commercial break.  this is easily the most awesomely bad show I’ve watched before)
  • Aaaand nerdy girl becomes magically sexy by taking down her library bun. Never seen that before.
  • I think Big Boy got new veneers.  They look good.  I think rappers getting their teeth fixed is a new trendy: Jay-Z, 50, Nelly…maybe Fabolous just didn’t get the memo yet?
  • Who is Shawn Clark, the lawyer…who busted into the interrogation room RIGHT as LisaRaye asked for her right to attorney?
  • Oh, this random convenient back story tells me that he’s her ex…who got another chick pregnant
  • I will say this is the best that Lisa Raye has looked, ever
  • She’s eating a plain bagel.  No cream cheese; no butter; no jelly.  Is that what’s hot in the streets now.  dry bread is the new black!!
  • What grown man says “You’re not interested in me!  I’m nice. I’m decent looking.  And I make six figures!!” [pouting face]
  • Does Queen Latifah think that just because she is singing the theme song that this show will be as good as Living Single

Thank you friend for letting me know that I can continue to not watch Single Ladies.

Season Finales Thursday 5/31/12: Touch, Mary Mary

Today is the last day of season finales from all the fall and mid-season shows. I’m sad that all my shows are done but boy am I happy about a break because these summer shows are not looking good. Here are the season finales happening tonight.

Touch – FOX 8/7c – 2 hour first season finale. As the Aster Corporation increases their interest in Jake, Martin joins forces with Abigail as the stakes of Jake’s custody escalate. When Avram reiterates to Martin that Jake and Amelia, a presumed dead girl with similar characteristics as Jake, are connected, Martin sets out on a passionate mission to uncover the truth. Meanwhile, circumstances intensify when Lucy enters the picture and seemingly unrelated events are tied together. I’m going to have to give this show another chance. I watched the first two episodes and gave up after that. It was good but moved really slow. I love Keifer Sutherland and so I’ll give it another chance.

Mary Mary – WE 9/8c – Season 1 finale. Erica gives birth; Erica and Tina perform “Go Get It” at the Grammys; Tina takes drastic measures to save her marriage. I heard this show is pretty good. I had too much on my dvr to add another show into the mix though.
