Fall TV: Week 1 & 2 (Spoiler Alert)

We are two weeks into the unofficial fall season and my dvr is already screaming from overload. Here are my thoughts on the shows so far.

The New Normal – I have to say that I am liking this show. It’s pretty funny and has a lot of heart. It does beat you over the head a bit with the world hates gay relationships but I still like it. Ellen Barkin and Andrew Rannells are my favorites. The show will receive a season pass from me. For those of you that were turned off by Nene Leakes (The Real Housewives of Atlanta) being on the show, she’s not on the show much so far. She is a recurring character so she won’t be seen a lot and when she is it’s only for a couple of scenes. The Voice – While no one has truly stood out to me so far this season, the show has been very entertaining. The show is about the contestants but it’s  also about the dynamic between the coaches. They have been quite hilarious and pretty much make the show. I’m in with the show this season. The blind auditions are always the best part of this show so after that maybe it won’t be as good.

X-Factor – Like I said before I didn’t watch this show last season because it just wasn’t good. While this season is better, I find my interest waning. The judges are ok. Simon Cowell is the best judge but we knew this from American Idol. Britney Spears seems very over rehearsed in these pre-taped episodes. It feels like she’s being fed lines at times. Demi Levato is a pretty good judge as well. But if I hear her tell some guy they are cute one more time, I might be done.  I will keep watching because I’m curious to see how Britney does with the live episodes. I want to see some crazy come out. Go On – I really wanted to hate this show but after watching 3 episodes of the show, I begrudgingly like it. Matthew Perry is pretty good. I feel like he is playing Chandler at times but that might just be the way Perry is. The supporting cast is great as well. While the premise of the show seems a little morbid – a man looses his wife in a car accident and has to cope with that lose by going to group therapy – it actually deals with the subject very lightheartedly and with a lot of sarcastic humor. This one gets a season pass.

Parenthood – The Bravermans are back to basically make you cry every week. So glad this show made it another season. It’s so good. Haddie is gone to college ,which just made this show exponentially better since she is the most annoying character, Jabar is still the cutest thing, There is a new kid, Max is still a little annoying and oh yeah, Kristina has breast cancer. That whooper was revealed to us in the latest episode this week and was so heart breaking. Jason Katims is so freaking amazing. He is the creator of the show and was an executive producer for one of my other favorite shows, Friday Night Lights. He is the reason I came to this show and he’s the reason I stay. It just has so much heart and the cast is so good. The season pass continues on this show.

The Mob Doctor – Potential. I don’t know. It was ok. I’m not blown away by the show. It felt a little generic like I have seen this movie and it got turned into a show. It has some great people in it though. The acting is one thing that it has going for it. One of my faves, Zach Gilford from Friday Night Lightsis in it and I just hope this show sticks for him. The ratings were pretty low on its premiere night so who knows how long the show will stick.  He needs a successful show. I’ll keep watching and see if it gets better.

Revolution – I came to this show simply because it has J.J Abrams’ (Alias, Fringe, Lost) name on it. The show is set 15 years into the future after the world goes dark. Life goes back to the days before the industrial revolution: families living in quiet cul-de-sacs, and when the sun goes down lanterns and candles are lit. On the fringes of small farming communities, danger lurks. In the midst of all this there is a young lady, whose life is changed when her father is killed because of his knowledge about the blackout. They go on a search to find her uncle who may also know something about the blackout. It started off slow, as do all of Abrams high-concept shows, but quickly picked up and drew you in answering some questions and then bringing up more questions to keep you coming back. I liked it. And it did very well in the ratings with a prime spot after The Voice. This gets a season pass from me and is worth checking out.

The Office – I was ready to give up on this show after the last 2 seasons but since this is the last season I decided that I should just stick it out. Glad I did because I laughed more in Thursday’s episode than I have in the last two seasons of the show. It was paced just right, the gags were hilarious, and the characters seemed like they had been refreshed after the debacle that was James Spader’s Robert California. That is all in great part to Greg Daniels who was the showrunner for  Office during its best seasons and has returned. Hopefully with his return, the show will get back on track.

Up All Night – Glad this show is back. Its pretty hilarious. The whole cast is great. I like the addition of Reagan’s brother, Scott (Luka Jones; Best Friends Forever). I’m glad he got on this show because he was pretty hilarious on his last show (Boo on NBC for cancelling that). This episode set up a great arc – The Ava Show getting cancelled and Chris working with Scott – that I believe will bring out some hilarious episodes. The season pass will continue on this one.

What To Watch: September 20

Lots of premieres tonight. NBC comedy is back and another Braxton gets their own show. My DVR is getting full and it’s not even the official premiere week yet.

8:30/7:30c – NBC – Up All Night – Season 2 Premiere. Christina Applegate, Maya Rudolph and Will Arnett all return for the second season of this hilarious show. In tonight’s premiere Reagan and Ava’s friendship gets tested after the news of the show’s cancellation. Meanwhile, Reagan hires her brother Scott (Luka Jones; Best Friends Forever) to help remodel their bathroom, and Chris decides to re-enter the working world.

9/8c – NBC – The Office – Season 9 Premiere. The show is back for its ninth and last season (finally).  The show is said to be back in fighting form after the travesty that has been the last two seasons. In the premiere, Jim and Dwight are thrown off-balance by the arrival of two young employees that the others dub “the new Jim” and “Dwight, Jr.” Andy comes back from Outward Bound leadership training with a desire for vengeance on Nellie. Will Oscar adopt Angela’s cat? Kevin saves a turtle.

9:30/8:30c – NBC – Parks & Recreation – Season 5 Premiere. Leslie and Andy visit Ben and April at their new jobs in Washington D.C., and Leslie feels overwhelmed by the city — especially after meeting two of her idols (Senators Barbara Boxer and Olympia Snowe). Meanwhile, Ron throws a “thank you” barbecue for the entire Parks and Recreation staff.

10/9c – WE – Tamar & Vince – Series Premiere. In the hit series Braxton Family Values, viewers were introduced to the bold and sassy youngest sister of the Braxton clan, Tamar, and her music mogul husband Vince Herbert. A true fan favorite, Tamar is back to claim the spotlight and reign “diva supreme.” The show will focus on Tamar’s obsession with achieving instant worldwide pop stardom and Vince’s attempts to help her get there, and keep his sanity in the process. As Tamar’s “husband-ager,” Vince (owner of Streamline Records and brains behind major pop star Lady Gaga) often walks a fine line between being a supportive husband and an authoritative manager. Crazy in love through their highs and lows, the couple is out to prove you can mix business with pleasure.

Network Upfronts 2012

I know I’m over 3 weeks late here but…. better late than never right? So upfronts happened and brought about the final nail to the coffins of many shows as well as plenty of renewals for the networks. We also get a preview of what the fall 2012 has in store for us.

Lets’s start with ABC. Their cancelled shows for the 11-12 season were Charlie’s Angels, Desperate Housewives, GCB, Man Up!, Missing, Pan Am, The River and Work It. Renewed shows are Castle, Modern Family, Body of Proof, Cougar Town, Dancing With the Stars, Grey’s Anatomy, Happy Endings, Last Man Standing, Once Upon A Time, Private Practice, Revenge, Suburgatory, The Bachelor, and The Middle.

I’m not really sad about any of the shows that were cancelled here. The only one that I feel they should have given more time to was GCB. Maybe let it run a little more in the summer to catch more of an audience. Their ratings weren’t terrible either so I didn’t really understand that one. As for everything that got renewed YES, YES, YES especially Cougar Town. TBS came in with a last minute save on the show because ABC was definitely going to ax it. So come this fall Cougar Town will no longer air on ABC but on TBS. Continue reading Network Upfronts 2012

Some TV and Movie Headlines of the Week

Thank you its the weekend. I can sleep in and catch up on some shows and movies. But before it ends and the new week starts lets recaps some of the stories and events from movies and tv this week.

Lets start off with NBC. They released their mid-season schedule this week  and truly just said f*@% it to any kind of common sense. They have taken off Prime Suspect and Community and moved almost every show around. Whitney is moving to from its nice post Office spot to Wednesday nights at 8:30/7:30c. It will follow the new Chelsea Handler show, Are You There Chelsea (Vodka got taken out of the title because this is family hour). It makes sense to pair these 2 shows together but 8/7c family hour is definitely not the place. These shows are supposed to be rude and crude and make lots of sex jokes. Both of these shows would be way better on cable where there is more freedom to do all that not on broadcast television. Up All Night will be taking over Whitney’s spot on Thursday nights. 30 Rock will take over Community’s spot. NBC says the show isn’t cancelled but you have to wonder when it will return. Prime Suspect looks like it’s getting the ax. They say they haven’t made a decision but they already stopped production on the show and are shooting the final 13th episode next week so you tell me if that isn’t a decision. New show, The Firm, based on the John Grisham novel, will take over the slot. Here is the rest of NBC’s schedule.

MONDAYS: 8-10 PM – The Voice (season premiere February 5 after the Superbowl; series resumes February 6); 10-11 PM – SMASH (February 6)

TUESDAYS: 8-10 PM – The Biggest Loser (January 3); 10-11 PM – Parenthood (through February 28); 10-11 PM – FASHION STAR (March 13, 9-11 p.m. with two-hour premiere; one-hour episodes resume March 20)

WEDNESDAYS: 8-8:30 PM – Whitney (January 11);8:30-9 PM – ARE YOU THERE, CHELSEA? (January 11); 9-10 PM – Rock Center with Brian Williams (February; 10-11 PM – Law & Order: Special Victims Unit

THURSDAY: 8-8:30 PM – 30 Rock (January 12); 8:30-9 PM – Parks and Recreation; 9-9:30 PM – The Office; 9:30-10 PM – Up All Night (January 12); 10-11 PM – THE FIRM (two-hour premiere January 8; Thursday time period premiere January 12)

FRIDAY: 8-9 PM – Who Do You Think You Are? (February 3); 9-10 PM – Grimm; 10-11 PM – Dateline NBC

SATURDAYS: Reruns

SUNDAYS: 7-9 PM – Dateline NBC (January); 8-9 PM – Harry’s Law (March 4); 9-11 PM – The Celebrity Apprentice (February 12)

ABC also unveiled their mid-season schedule and one of my favorite shows was notably missing from the lineup. CougarTown staring Friends alum, Courtney Cox Arquette (she might not be going with Arquette anymore; Kanye shrug) was not in the line up and this coupled with the mess that was NBC made me angry about the coming mid-season. The show will air sometime in March with a shorter season as the episode count been cut down to 15 instead of the 22 that were going to air. This isn’t a great sign for the show but hopefully when it does return people watch and the ratings go up because the show is quite hilarious.

Good news Arrested Development fans. The show is officially returning. There had already been an announcement about the show returning but it hadn’t found a home yet. This time it has. The series will be shown exclusively on Netflix starting in 2013. No word on if all the cast members will be returning  or if the long-awaited movie is going to happen but the show is back and that’s all that matters.

Ugh Twilight: Breaking Dawn pt 1 came out yesterday and is on track to make almost $140 million. It started off the weekend with midnight showings making over $30 million and $72 million total on Friday. It’s the 3rd biggest opening day ever behind Harry Potter and The Deadly Hallows: Part 2 and the second Twilight movie, New Moon. Everyone I know who has seen this is raving about it and saying it was actually really good. I don’t get it.  I watched the first one and that was awful and nothing ever convinced me to see any of the other ones. Kristen Stewart is also one of the worst actresses. Hell the whole main cast is pretty bad. Glad this is the end of this franchise because these kids are gonna disappear after this. Their movies that ventured out of the Twilight franchise have been less than spectacular and have not been seen by many so I look forward to the day I don’t have to see another Twilight ad or Kristen Stewart’s awkward and unsmiling face.

The trailer for a new Denzel Washington movie Safe House came out this week. The film stars also stars Ryan Reynolds and Vera Farmiga (with really bad hair). It’s about young CIA agent (Reynolds) who must watch a fugitive being held in a safe house (Washington). The house is attacked and they must work together run to get to a secure. Love Denzel and love Reynolds so I was already in without seeing the trailer but man when I saw it, I was in. I love when Denzel goes bad. Training Day was a great movie, I don’t think he should have won an Oscar for that but it was a great movie. Denzel plays bad so well. Why he didn’t do it more often I don’t know. The premise of this movie is not anything new. Its been done before but it definitely looks awesome and they use one of my fav songs from Kanye and Jay-Z’s Watch The Throne album that features the lovely Frank Ocean called “No Church in The Wild.” Good action, acting and eye candy what more can you ask for. The movie is in theaters February 2012.

Brad Pitt says he is going to be retiring from acting in 3 years. He did an interview this week with the UK version of 60 minutes. He said “I am really enjoying the producing side and development of stories and putting those pieces together. And getting stories to the plate that might have had a tougher time otherwise…” If I had read this in the late 90s or early 2000s, I would have been upset because Brad was making some wonderful movies at that time. Now I would say ok if he wants to I’m fine with that. The peak of his acting career has passed and while he still makes plenty of good movies, he could retire and not be missed. There are many younger actors that have taken the place that he held during the 90s when he was making hit movies and named People’s Sexiest Man. I would miss Pitt movies but I’d be ok just watching his old ones like Legends of The Fall, which is one of the best movies ever.

Thoughts on New Shows

I have watched so much tv in the last 3 weeks that I can’t keep much straight anymore.  There are tons of new shows and some of them are already on the brink of cancellation as I write this.  Hopefully this can give you a little idea of what some of these shows are and if you should even bother. What’s On Tonight; Wednesday Sept 14

Tons of things to watch tonight.  Have a good number of shows premiering.

8/7c

Season premiere of Survivor: South Pacific on CBS.  I watched the first season of this show and that was it.  I’ve maybe watched a clip here and there of the show.  It’s up here because I know a lot of people like it.

Series premiere of H8R on CW.  This show is about “celebrities” who confront their past haters and try to get them to like them.  Hosted by A.C Slater AKA Mario Lopez.  This first episode follows Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi.  Like I said “celebrities.”

Season Finale of Melissa & Joey on ABC Family.  This show is not great but it takes you back to the 90’s and the days of TGIF on ABC.  It’s your standard average sitcom and there really aren’t many of those on tv these days.

9/8c

Season premiere of Top Model: All Star Edition on CW.  All of your fav (and not so fav) Top Model contestants are returning trying to extend their 15 minutes of fame in the 17th cycle of the show with guest judge Nicki Minaj. Why has this show been on for so long and why have I watched EVERY season?  I truly tell myself every season that I’m not gonna watch and get sucked in by the craziness of Tyra Banks but then it premieres and she smizes me into a trance and I’m in for the season of Tyra lying to these over dramatic lunatics with delusions that they are going to be super models. This season should be good because these girls know the game and in order to get more camera time they are gonna turn up the drama big time.

9:30/8:30c

Season Finale of Big Brother 13 on CBS.  This season had the potential to be soo good with Evil Dick, Danielle, Jeff, Jordan, and Brenchel, but of course it didn’t pan out.  Now the season is ending with most of the good people kicked out and Rachel, Porsche, and Adam left standing.  I don’t care who wins as long as Adam doesn’t make it to the final 2 or win the fan favorite prize.

10/9c

Series Premiere of Up All Night on NBC.  This show has some good people on it; Christina Applegate (Married With Children, Samantha Who), Will Arnett (Arrested Development), and Maya Rudolph (SNL, Bridesmaids).  Hopefully it’ll be pretty funny.

Season Finale of Necessary Roughness on USA.  This show was one of the best shows of the summer.  Check it out online. It has got a solid cast and nice storylines.  It’s just a fun show.

Happy Watching!!!
