ABC’s Trophy Wife Cancelled

ABC has cancelled Trophy Wife along with the comedies SuburgatoryMixology and The Neighbors. If you read my post last fall, Why Aren’t You Watching Trophy Wife?, who know how sad I am about this. This show was really funny. The best part was the character of Burt played by the Albert Tsai. He was so wonderful. In scenes with bigger stars he was a scene stealer on many occasions.

It’s definitely not a surprise that it got canceled. After series low 0.7 rating it got this past Tuesday, I knew it was done. It never got its fair shake at all. It was placed on Tuesday night in the 9 pm hour with The Goldbergs and no lead in. How did ABC expect it to survive? I will continue to carry on that if they had put The Goldbergs and Trophy Wife on Wednesday night with The Middle and Modern Family, those shows would have done way better in the ratings than they did.

Oh well, such are the ways of network television. I’ll just look forward to the rest of the unaired Trophy Wife episodes and to the future projects of all the cast members of this lovely show.

NBC Pulls ‘Welcome to the Family,’ ‘Ironside,’ Sets ‘Community Return

Saw this coming from a mile away. When NBC picked up this pilot, I knew for sure this was gonna fail. I mean you are remaking a show that people use to watch in the 60s and isn’t remembered by many. Nostalgia will only get you so far. People just weren’t watching. It needed to bring something else to the table and unfortunately it was just another procedural that clearly people are tired of. Hopefully Blair Underwood can get on a show soon that is worthy of the man’s talents. YAY Community is back though; probably for it’s final season.

Upfronts 2013

image

It’s that time of the year again. The upfronts here. It’s the time when all the broadcast networks are going to unveil their fall schedules. We usually have to wait until the day of each network’s upfront to find out for sure what has been cancelled or renewed but this year that news has been coming all week.
I always get really excited about upfronts but I’m especially excited for this year’s because one of my projects for grad school was to play ABC exec and put together an upfront for class (shoutout to my group members Emma, Debbie and Yijing). It was soo fun so I’m looking forward to seeing how accurate we were with what got cancelled and what was picked up. Here is the schedule for the broadcast networks to unveil their schedule.

NBC – Monday 5/13

Fox – Monday Afternoon 5/13

ABC – Tuesday 5/14

CBS – Wed 5/15

CW – Thursday 5/16

A lot of cancellations and pickups have already been announced. For those check out TVLine, The Wrap, Deadline, or Hollywood Reporter. I will post as each schedule becomes available. Stay tuned for updates.

TV Stuff (Cougar Town, Downton Abbey and More)

Boss Cancelled By Starz – The drama lead by Kelsey Grammer has been cancelled. It recently ended its second season recently and will be not coming back for a third season. “After much deliberation, we have made the difficult decision to not proceed with ‘Boss. We remain proud of this award-winning show, its exceptional cast and writers, and are grateful to Kelsey Grammer, (series creator) Farhad Safinia and our partners at Lionsgate TV,” said the network. The show was a generally liked by critics  but not so much with audiences. It did bring Kelsey Grammer a Golden Globe award. It’s a little surprising that they cancelled the show  since they renewed the show for a second season before the numbers were in for the first season.

Dirty Jobs Cancelled – Discovery Channel’s Dirty Jobs has been cancelled. This is the second big cancellation from the network after American Chopper was cancelled last week. The show ended its eighth and last season in September.

Chevy Chase leaving Community – The actor has had a pretty rocky relationship with the show. There was the much publicized feud with series creator, Dan Harmon, production being interrupted because Chase was not happy with what was being shot and his use of the N-word on set when he was making a point about where his racist character was headed. Most of Community’s 4th and possibly last season has already been shot with 2 episodes left. Chase will be in all except the final 2. Community premieres this coming mid-season on February 7th, 2013 on NBC.

New Promos for Smash and Cougar TownSmash and Cougar Town return at the beginning of next year and they just released some new promos. Looking forward to an Ellis-less Smash and all the drama that comes with this show. Also looking forward to the wine drinking cul-de-sac crew on Cougar Town.

Cougar Town returns on its new home, TBS, on January 8th, 2013.

Smash returns to NBC on February 5th, 2013.

Downton Abbey Renewed – Downton Abbey will be back for a fourth season. Season 3 just finished airing in the UK and will premiere in the States January 6th, 2013 on PBS.  PBS will air a recap of season 2 and a preview of the upcoming season 3 on Sunday, November 25th at 8/7c.

Partners, 666 Park Avenue and Last Resort Cancelled

Cancellations are afoot. The ax was dropped on 3 new shows Friday. CBS cancelled new comedy, Partners and ABC cancelled 666 Park Avenue and Last Resort.

Partners is the second show cancelled by CBS this season. They were the first network to cancel a show this fall with the critically and audience panned, Made In Jersey. Partners seemed like it would be ok. It was created by creators of  Will & Grace and that show was good so I thought this one had potential. Plus Michael Urie was in it so I was up for it.  The show premiered to 7 million and steadily went down from there. The post How I Met Your Mother spot seems to have bad luck for new comedies on CBS. The last 3 shows to premiere in that 8:30/7:30c timeslot (Mad Love, Accidentally On Purpose, Welcome To The Captain) have all been cancelled. CBS has taken Partners off the schedule and will more than likely dumb the rest of the episodes that have been produced on Saturday night.

666 Park Avenue just never took off at all. It premiered to 7 million viewers and hit a series low of under 4 million with the latest episode that aired last Sunday. I watched the premiere and it was ok. I wanted it to be better as it has a pretty great cast on the show, but it just didn’t and I have 5 aired episodes still unwatched on my dvr. Last Resort also got cancelled by ABC. The show was a critical favorite but suffered from low ratings. The show was good but I it just didn’t click with me. I tried to stick to the show but after 4 episodes I was pretty much done with it. Poor Andre Braugher though. He just can’t catch a break. His last show, Men of A Certain Age was cancelled by TNT last year because of low ratings. ABC will air the rest of 666 and Last Resort‘s 13 episodes.

Another One Bites The Dust: NBC’s Animal Practice Cancelled

NBC just cancelled its new series Animal Practice after airing 5 episodes. The show started off with a healthy 12 million viewers but has consistently dropped every week to this week’s airing yielding its lowest ratings of 3.8 million viewers. The show will continue to air until November 7 and Whitney will premiere its 2nd season in its place. There are sure to be many more cancellations coming as no one is watching many of these new shows.

First Cut Of The Season: CBS Cancels “Made In Jersey”

I didn’t even get a chance to know you Jersey. CBS has cancelled freshman series Made in Jersey, making it the first network to cut a show in this new fall season. The series, which aired on Friday nights, premiered 2 weeks ago to the tune of 7.7 million viewers. This number isn’t terrible for a Friday but the number of people watching in the coveted 18-49 group for advertisers was extremely low. The number only got lower on the 2nd week thus prompting CBS to make the chop. It will be replaced by the reality show Undercover Boss at the beginning of November.

This show was just so-so as I said in a post 2 weeks ago. The only thing that I was excited about was that my man Kristoffer Polaha was going to be in it. So sad. He just can’t catch a break at all. All of his series where he has been a regular in the last 6 years have been cancelled, either after a few episodes or after one season. Hopefully his next show will get picked up and make it or he can just get on an already established show as a new character.

With this cancellation by CBS, Entertainment Weekly has officially started its Fall TV Death Watch. See if your favorite shows will make it by May.

Network Upfronts 2012

I know I’m over 3 weeks late here but…. better late than never right? So upfronts happened and brought about the final nail to the coffins of many shows as well as plenty of renewals for the networks. We also get a preview of what the fall 2012 has in store for us.

Lets’s start with ABC. Their cancelled shows for the 11-12 season were Charlie’s Angels, Desperate Housewives, GCB, Man Up!, Missing, Pan Am, The River and Work It. Renewed shows are Castle, Modern Family, Body of Proof, Cougar Town, Dancing With the Stars, Grey’s Anatomy, Happy Endings, Last Man Standing, Once Upon A Time, Private Practice, Revenge, Suburgatory, The Bachelor, and The Middle.

I’m not really sad about any of the shows that were cancelled here. The only one that I feel they should have given more time to was GCB. Maybe let it run a little more in the summer to catch more of an audience. Their ratings weren’t terrible either so I didn’t really understand that one. As for everything that got renewed YES, YES, YES especially Cougar Town. TBS came in with a last minute save on the show because ABC was definitely going to ax it. So come this fall Cougar Town will no longer air on ABC but on TBS. Continue reading Network Upfronts 2012
