Comic-Con TV Roundup

Another San Diego Comic-Con came to an end this Sunday and it came with so much TV news and trailers. It seemed like TV was really the star of the con and for the first time overtook film at the big event. There were first looks at highly anticipated new series, teasers for upcoming seasons and news on some of our favorite long running series.  Take a look at all the trailers and enjoy.

Legion – FX

FX’s series Legion is a new X-Men series from Marvel that had its coming out party at Comic-Com this weekend with the release of its first trailer. The series is an origin story of David Haller, who comic book fans know as the mutant Legion. The series will premiere some time in 2017.

Upfronts 2015: CW Schedule

The CW always last on the schedule doesn’t have much coming this 2015-2016 season. They have had a pretty great year renewing everything except Hart of Dixie and The Messengers (which absolutely no one watched). They have picked up only 3 shows from their development slate, 1 for the Fall and 2 coming at midseason. I still think Super Girl (picked up for CBS) should be theirs but I’ll reserve judgment after I watch that pilot. They also moved a couple of their returning shows to new nights giving Julie Plec a night of her own with her shows, The Vampire Diaries and The Originals (which I thought should have been put together from the moment The Originals spinoff was a go but what do I know).

Cancelled: Hart of Dixie, The Messengers

The Perks Of Being A Wallflower Review *Spoilers*

Guest post by Christy Erving.

Heading into the movie theater on a pretty mundane Saturday evening in October, I didn’t have many expectations for Perks. The previous weekend, I attempted to convince a few of my friends to watch the movie with me, but we ended up seeing Taken 2 instead: very disappointing. Luckily, I had the complete opposite experience at Perks, which I ventured to the theater to see soloA coming-of-age novel by Stephen Chbosky adapted into a feature film, The Perks of Being A Wallflower chronicles the freshman year of a somewhat troubled high schooler, Charlie (Logan Lerman; Percy Jackson & The Olympians), as he struggles to develop meaningful friendships and break through some of his social awkwardness. This is the perfect formula for a great movie…well, it is for me. I love “underdog” stories, so I was hooked as soon as I witnessed the first scene of Charlie eating alone in the cafeteria his first day of high school. What began as just another one of those typical high school “geek-to-chic” storylines (I’m thinking Mean Girls or Grease, which actually happen to be movies I adore) developed into a touching story about a young man who makes strides each day to fight the demons of the sexual exploitation his aunt inflicted upon him for years and the guilt of his aunt’s death when she was killed in a sudden car accident.

Charlie is fortunate to meet some awesome friends during his first year of high school including Patrick (Ezra Miller; City Island, Royal Pains), Mary Elizabeth (Mae Whitman; Parenthood), and Sam (Emma Watson; Harry Potter), who later becomes his love interest. Their friendship circle endures a series of highs and lows, and his friends are also dealing with some seriously heavy, albeit realistic, issues, which make this a must-see-movie. There are multiple layers of storytelling, which is what I absolutely loved. Everyone had their own set of issues, but their friends always looked out for them in the long-run. I don’t want to give away too much, so I won’t delve into the other storylines.

The acting all-around was brilliant, but I truly believe that Miller and Lerman deserve Golden Globe and Oscar nods. Miller almost steals the show, delivering a moving performance full of heart-wrenching gusto. Can I just say that I think this might be the best movie I’ve seen all year?!

Other actors and actresses you might recognize from the film include Nina Dobrev (The Vampire Diaries), Paul Rudd (I Love You Man, Wanderlust), Kate Walsh(Private Practice) (she’s looking fab and aging well!), Dylan McDermott (American Horror Story), and Joan Cusack (Shameless).

Not sure if the movie is still playing in theaters, but it was worth my ten bucks. If it’s no longer in theaters, you’ve got to catch it on Redbox. 🙂

Fall TV Week 4 & 5

Raising Hope – This show continues to be so hilarious. I feel like it has gotten better and better as the seasons have gone by. Martha Plimpton and Cloris Leachman continue to deliver the funniest lines.

Hart of Dixie – I can’t even lie. I love this show. It’s so cliché and really not that good but it just make me nostalgic for the WB from the 90’s when Dawson’s Creek, Felicity, 7th Heaven, etc were still on. The love triangle with George and Wade is getting tired. I like her with Wade. She’s so blah with George but Wade keeps her on her toes. This whole Lavon and his ex girlfriend running against each other for mayor is so stupid. I guess they needed another story for Lavon since he has nothing going on with his character except for being the wise friend to Zoe. I will keep watching though.

90210 – Cliche, predictable, overly dramatic; these are all things that describe this show, yet I still love watching it. It’s one of my guilty pleasures. My favorite thing is to do is to yell at the screen at all the plot holes and predict what is going to happen in the episode. This season Dixon is in a wheel chair; Silver is feeling sorry for herself because all her boys left her; Annie has nothing to do but fawn over Dixon; Naomi and Max are married and his friend hates her; Liam is an idiot and being blackmailed by that psycho heffa Vanessa; Navid is trying and failing at being a bad boy; and Adrianna slept with someone else has feelings for him but is staying with Dixon out of pity because he was in an accident. The season just started and it’s already pretty ridiculous. I will stick it out as I have for 4 other seasons.

Arrow – This show is like Batman and Revenge but together. This guy has a list and he’s checking it twice. He also has a lair which he was all set up with computers and other equipment out of nowhere. I know we are supposed to suspend some belief in watching these shows but that part was just a mess. Besides these little annoyances, I liked the show. I feel like I already know where the show is going to go but I like the lead and the different people involved in the story. Not too bad of a pilot. I will keep watching this one and see if it gets better.

Beauty & The Beast – I don’t know about this show. It’s pretty bad; the kind of bad that still makes you watch, like a train wreck. I don’t know why they are calling this show Beauty and The Beast because the beast is not beastly at all. He’s more like the Hulk who only turns beastly when he gets angry. It’s so over dramatic but not in the fun way 90210 is. I think I was laughing for more than half of the premiere episode. Just skip this one unless you are a fan of terrible shows then please by all means continue to watch.

Nashville – It’s fantastic. It’s soapy but smart and beautifully written with amazing acting. I am slightly biased because I LOVE CONNIE BRITTON but even if I didn’t, this is still a great show. Hayden Panettiere is great playing a slutty Taylor Swift-esqe bad girl. Loved her for a long time so I’m very happy that she is back on television. After the premiere, I just see so many places that the show can go. If you were turned off by the Nashville aspect of the show, don’t worry about that there is plenty more there to watch. Give the show a try — unless you hate good  tv.

Chicago Fire – I thought this show was pretty good. I felt like I was watching Law & Order when I watched. Turns out it is produced by Dick Wolf, the producer of the Law & Order franchise. It has a good cast. Taylor Kinney who was Mason, Tyler’s uncle, on The Vampire Diaries all kinds of brooding hotness. Jesse Spencer, from House fame, plays the rival to Taylor Kinney’s character. Monica Raymund (Lie To Me) also stars. It was your typical procedural. Nothing spectacular but I’ll continue watching.

The Vampire Diaries – Sucks to be Matt since everyone is just gonna keep telling him they wished he died all season. I use to love Selena (Stephen and Elena) but after a season of them not being together, I’m way over them and hoping for some more Delena (Damon and Elena) this season. I don’t know what happened at the ending of this. It was so weird. I know all will be revealed soon though. Solid return episode and yesssssssssssssss Klaus is back and hopefully to stay.

What To Watch: October 11 (Vampire Diaries, VP Debates, Totally Biased)

8/7c – CW – The Vampire Diaires – Season 4 Premiere. Tonight’s premiere kicks off immediately where Season 3 ended. Elena awakens on the morning after the accident to find the thing she dreaded most has come true – she died with vampire blood in her system and now must go through the terrible transition to become a vampire or face certain death. Stefan promises Elena that he and Bonnie will exhaust every possible way out of the situation, but Damon is furious with his brother for letting Elena die in the first place. Bonnie pays a terrible price for her attempt to change Elena’s fate, while Damon takes out his frustration and rage on Matt. In a rare moment of empathy, Rebekah is deeply touched by Stefan and Elena’s devotion to one another. Finally, Pastor Young and the Town Council members begin rounding up the vampires and their supporters, leading to an unexpected tragedy. I am soooooo ready for this return. This is one of my favorite shows and it has been gone for entirely too long.

9/8c – ABC/NBC/CBS/FOX – Vice Presidential Debate. Joe Biden and Paul Ryan go at each other tonight in the 2nd of 3 debates.

9/8c – CW – Beauty and The Beast – Series Premiere. Police officer Cat Chandler investigates a case that leads her to Vincent, a man guarding a secret; as Cat is drawn closer to Vincent, she must keep their relationship secret.

10/9c – FX – It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia – Season 8 Premiere. Dennis and Dee’s ailing grandfather Pop-Pop is wasting away in the hospital, and they have to decide whether to pull the plug. But things get complicated when The Gang learns of Pop-Pop’s history as a Nazi, and Mac, Charlie and Frank set off in search of the old man’s spoils from the war.

10/9c – TLC – Little Shop Of Gypsies – Series Premiere.  First seen on MY BIG FAT GYPSY WEDDING, British dressmaker Thelma Madine has taken gypsy and traveler women from maidenhood to matrimony with her over-the-top dresses and extravagant designs. As an ardent supporter of women’s rights, Thelma now wants to help unconventional gypsies – young women who would rather get hired than get hitched. Thelma begins to search for her 10 new trainees; once the girls are chosen, chaos ensues and Thelma must act fast before it all falls apart.

10:30/9:30c – FX – The League. Season 4 Premiere. The League prepares for the draft and the arrival of Kevin and Jenny’s baby boy. Taco’s business dealings with Jerry Jones get the guys invited to the Dallas Cowboys’ Training Camp.

11:30/10:30c – FX – Totally Biased With W. Kamau Bell. Season 1 Fall Premiere. comedian W. Kamau Bell as he hilariously dissects politics, pop culture, race, religion, sex and the media from his own unique point of view.

Fall TV: Top New and Returning Shows

If you have followed this blog for any amount of time, you know I love television. You also know I LOVE FALL TELEVISION. The air begins to cool down, Starbucks brings back their pumpkin spiced flavor and all of my favorites and potential favorites come back from their summer hiatus. It’s the most magical time ever.

So here I’m going to wax poetic on what returning shows I am looking forward to as well as what new ones I hope are as good as their trailers seem.

Returning Shows

Castle

Season 5 is going to be amazing. Season 4 ended with the writers giving the fans what they have wanted for 4 long seasons and they definitely did not disappoint. Season 5 will start with the morning after of Castle and Beckett getting together as well as what happens with Esposito and Beckett after they quit the force. Hopefully we will get some mending of Ryan and Esposito’s friendship. Can’t wait for this one. The new season starts Monday, September 24 @10/9c on ABC.

Network Upfronts 2012

I know I’m over 3 weeks late here but…. better late than never right? So upfronts happened and brought about the final nail to the coffins of many shows as well as plenty of renewals for the networks. We also get a preview of what the fall 2012 has in store for us.

Lets’s start with ABC. Their cancelled shows for the 11-12 season were Charlie’s Angels, Desperate Housewives, GCB, Man Up!, Missing, Pan Am, The River and Work It. Renewed shows are Castle, Modern Family, Body of Proof, Cougar Town, Dancing With the Stars, Grey’s Anatomy, Happy Endings, Last Man Standing, Once Upon A Time, Private Practice, Revenge, Suburgatory, The Bachelor, and The Middle.

I’m not really sad about any of the shows that were cancelled here. The only one that I feel they should have given more time to was GCB. Maybe let it run a little more in the summer to catch more of an audience. Their ratings weren’t terrible either so I didn’t really understand that one. As for everything that got renewed YES, YES, YES especially Cougar Town. TBS came in with a last minute save on the show because ABC was definitely going to ax it. So come this fall Cougar Town will no longer air on ABC but on TBS. Continue reading Network Upfronts 2012

Season Finales Thursday 05/10/12

Finales Finales and more finales. Many of our favorites shows air their final episodes of the season tonight. What are you going to be watching?

The Big Bang Theory – CBS 8/7c – Season 5 finale. The gang rushes to put a wedding together when Howard and Bernadette decide they want to be married before he goes on his NASA launch. We also get to see Howard’s reaction to learning Leonard proposed to Penny.

The Vampire Diaries – CW 8/7c – Season 3 finale. Tonight a wonderful season of one of the best shows comes to an end. In this episode, Elena reminisces on simpler times when her parents were still alive. Elsewhere Stefan and Damon go on a mission and Caroline and Tyler have to make a decision that is life altering.

The Office – NBC 9/8c – Season 8 finale. This season has truly been the worst. I wish this finale was the series finale. There was maybe one episode where I laughed consistently throughout. James Spader’s character is out after this season and they want to do a Dwight spinoff. Why?? I hope NBC renews it for a 13 episode 9th and final season. On tonight’s finale, Andy returns to Dunder Mifflin as a janitor, with a secret plan to stage a coup.  Dwight goes to some crazier than usual lengths to steal a DNA sample from Angela’s baby in order to prove his paternity.
The Secret Circle – CW 9/8c – Season 1 concludes with Jake, Melissa and Adam try to save Faye from the witch hunters; Cassie and Diana must use their dark magic to unleash the crystal skull; Dawn and Charles discover a new way to get their power back. I hope this show doesn’t get cancelled because it started really slow but got really good. I think it fits well with its sister show, The Vampire Diaries.
Parks and Recreation – NBC 9:30/8:30c – Season 4 finale. Everyone is waiting for the election results. Paul Rudd continues his guest role as Bobby Newport.

Some Midseason Returns and New Shows I Look Forward To

The holidays are here and some of your shows got cancelled. Others have been in reruns for weeks and you are anxious for them to return. Well don’t fret people. You can find the dates of every single show’s return date as well as new shows that will be premiering this Winter on cable and broadcast networks here from Tvaholic and Entertainment Weekly. Shows return as early as the first day of the year, January 1st. Here are some of the ones I will be watching.

The Vampire Diaires has been at a 10 this season. Soooo deliciously great and so frustrating at the same time. If you aren’t caught up ****SPOILER ALERT**** Stephen gained some of his humanity back showing that he still cares about Damon and Elena but he’s done so much that I don’t know how they are gonna bring him back from where he is and on top of that he has now royally pissed Klaus off so that is gonna have some major consequences for everyone in Mystic Falls because as we know Klaus is insane. Damon and Elena might happen. I kind of want it to. I know that would make her a little like Katherine but Stephen has pissed me off a lot this season and I love Damon so much. Also Carolyn and Tyler broke up ughh. I can’t wait for its return. It’s gonna be awesome. Yeah its a little soap operaish but everyone I’ve turned on to this show LOVES it. It’s just plain wonderful. New episodes return Thursday, January 5 at 8/7c on the CW.

I have said enough about this show for a lifetime here and here. New episodes return Wednesday, January 4 at 10/9c on ABC.

Project Runway is back and this time with an all star edition. The show has been pretty stale the last couple of seasons have been pretty meh. So I’m excited that this season is the all star edition and a bunch of my faves are returning. I’m sad that they have new judges though and a new host and there is no Tim Gunn. How can there be a Project Runway without Tim Gunn? I happen to think that the life of the show is of course great designs and drama but the mentor relationship between Tim and the contestants. The new host is “supermodel,” Angela Lindvall and the judges are Isaac Mizrahi, Georgina Chapman, and Joanna Coles. The cast is ok. The only ones I have any interest in are Austin Scarlett, Anthony Williams and Mondo Guerra. Everyone else ehh. The new season begins Thursday, January 5 at 9/8c on Lifetime.

White Collar is one of my fave shows and I’m so excited about the second half of this season coming up. Part one ended with Peter’s wife, Elizabeth getting taken by Keller and Peter closing in on figuring out that Neal and Mozzie had the treasure that was stolen. Love this show. Matt Bomer is so great and I’m looking forward to seeing how the dynamic of Peter and Neal changes when the truth comes out about Neal lying to him. I really like that friendship so it should get really good. New episodes return Tuesday, January 17 at 9/8c on USA.

This show is a sequel to the John Grisham book of the same name. It’s set 10 years after the book and the movie and Josh Lucas (Sweet Home Alabama, J. Edgar) plays the main character Mitch McDeere. The family has been in witness protection since the events from the book and movie and have now come out . That’s when bad things start to happen for them. The show also stars Tricia Helfer (Battlestar Galactica) as a shady lawyer. This looks like its gonna be pretty good. Hopefully it will be a hit for NBC because they need one desperately. It takes over the Thursday time slot the ill fated Prime Suspect inhabited. The show premieres Sunday, January 8 at 9/8c and moves to its actual time slot Thursday, January 12 at 10/9c on NBC.
