What To Watch: September 10

It’s the unofficial start of the Fall season tonight and there are so many premieres to watch tonight. Be sure to give some of these returning and new shows a shot.

7/6c – ESPN – Monday Night Football – The 43rd season premiere of the long running tradition will premiere with the Cincinnati Bengals versus the Baltimore Ravens. I couldn’t even begin to tell you anything about these two teams or if it’ll even be a good game, but if you love football then you should be watching.
8/7c – VH1 – Basketball Wives LA – This train wreck of a show returns for its second season premiere tonight and for all that love this series it won’t disappoint. People returning to the show are Jackie Christie, Gloria and Laura Govan, Malaysia Pargo and Draya Michele. Other newbies will be introduced as the season goes on and there will always be enough fighting and drama for everyone to get their fill.
8/7c – NBC – The Voice – Season 3 premiere – This show in 2 seasons has definitely gone downhill. I almost stopped watching last season because the quality just wasn’t as good as Season 1. I am holding out hope that they have some amazing singers this year. NBC is rolling out a three night premiere for this show and tonight starts of with the beginning of the blind auditions with all the coaches returning (Christina Aguilera, Blake Shelton, Adam Levine, and CeeLo Green), Carson Daly as host and Christina Milian doing absolutely nothing.
9/8c – A&E – Hoarders – Season 6 Premiere. This show is a mess. I just can’t take it. I’m all for train wrecks but this is just a sad show. Tonight’s premiere focuses on a husband who threatens to take his children and leave since his wife has made their home a complete nightmare to live in with the amount of clothes she has accumulated. Another woman moves into her son’s apartment because she can no longer live in her home because of her hoarding but it still follows her to her new place.
10/9c – NBC – The New Normal – Series Premiere. This show from creator Ryan Murphy is about a gay couple Bryan (Andrew Rannells; The Book of Mormon) and David (Justin Bartha; The Hangover) who want a baby. And just when they think they will never get one, Goldie (Georgia King; One Day) shows up looking for an escape from dead-end life and her bigoted grandmother (Ellen Barkin; She Hate Me, Ocean’s Thirteen). She decides to move her young daughter with her to LA and while seeking means to gain some money decides to be the surrogate to Bryan and David’s baby. This show could have potential. We shall see. It’ll probably be good this season or this first episode even and then just disappoint the rest of the season in typical Murphy fashion. The show’s regular night is Tuesdays @9:30/8:30c.
10:30/9:30c – NBC – Go On – Series Premiere. This show ran its premiere towards the end of the Olympics on a random late night and most people didn’t catch it. Here is your chance to get it again. This show stars Matthew Perry (Friends, The Good Wife) as a Ryan, a man who recently lost his wife in a car accident is now ready to get back to work. While he seems like himself, his boss wants him to get some counseling to deal with the loss. He joins a support group with to get in, get out and get back to work as quickly as possible. Ryan’s total lack of interest in healing might be just what this group needs – and maybe, what he needs to move on with his life. I watched the preview episode and I didn’t hate but I didn’t like it either. I shall be giving it another go tonight to see how I feel again. The thing is, as horrible as this sounds, I secretly want this show to fail so that it can free up Matthew Perry for The Good Wife where there is an amazing showdown with him and Peter (Chris Noth) going down. The show will also move to its regular night on Tuesdays @9/8c.

If you have followed this blog for any amount of time, you know I love television. You also know I LOVE FALL TELEVISION. The air begins to cool down, Starbucks brings back their pumpkin spiced flavor and all of my favorites and potential favorites come back from their summer hiatus. It’s the most magical time ever.

So here I’m going to wax poetic on what returning shows I am looking forward to as well as what new ones I hope are as good as their trailers seem.

Returning Shows

Castle

Season 5 is going to be amazing. Season 4 ended with the writers giving the fans what they have wanted for 4 long seasons and they definitely did not disappoint. Season 5 will start with the morning after of Castle and Beckett getting together as well as what happens with Esposito and Beckett after they quit the force. Hopefully we will get some mending of Ryan and Esposito’s friendship. Can’t wait for this one. The new season starts Monday, September 24 @10/9c on ABC.

One Year Anniversary

In case you didn’t know, I moved. Not moved like I changed apartments or something small like that. I moved across the country to Los Angeles. If you are one of those people that is bad at geography that is in California on the West coast and a long way from Houston, TX. I started a graduate program in Communications Management at the University of Southern California.

I say all this because in all the hecticness that a move and starting school entails, I have been intermittently posting and forgot the one year anniversary of Iwatch2much.  I couldn’t believe that it had been a year already. It feels like just yesterday when I was fighting several friends and telling them I’m not a writer or a blogger because I was afraid. But that fear has been put aside and I have had a good time doing it. Thank you so much to everyone who has taken a look at the page, whether you came by once and never again or you are a subscriber (If you aren’t a subscriber click on that little Follow button). Thank you. I appreciate all of you.

The Green Mile’s Michael Clarke Duncan Dies

Michael Clarke Duncan in The Green Mile

Michael Clarke Duncan, the actor best known for his Academy Award nominated supporting role in The Green Mile died earlier today. His death is due to complications that stem from a heart attack he had in July of this year of which he never fully recovered from. He was 54 years old His rep released a statement saying,

Michael Clarke Duncan passed away this morning in Los Angeles, said his fiancée, Reverend Omarosa Manigault. The Oscar-nominated actor suffered a myocardial infarction on July 13 and never fully recovered.  Manigault is grateful for all of your prayers and asks for privacy at this time. Celebrations of his life, both private and public, will be announced at a later date.

This is so sad. The Green Mile is up there as one of my fave movies and he is the main reason for that. He was a pretty good actor and just always seemed so humble and full of life in all the interviews I saw of him. I hope that his fiance and family get some peace and privacy during this time and that he rests in peace.

Some TV News

Good news for those that have hated The Office ever since Steve Carrell left or even before that. Season 9, which will premiere Thursday September 20th on NBC, will be the series last one. Thank the Lord!!! After the disaster that was season 8 it needed to end. Why they didn’t go out while they were on top makes no sense to me. I watched all the episodes from last season, but I could barely tell you what happened because the show became background noise for me while I did other things. With the show ending, there is still the possibility of seeing some of the characters from the show. NBC is developing a spin-off with Dwight as the main character. Some of the characters from the new show will be slowly introduced this season on The Office. Hopefully this show doesn’t get picked up. Of all the characters from the show to get a spin-off, I definitely wouldn’t have said Dwight.

The Real Husbands of Hollywood was confirmed by BET for 10 episodes. If you remember the series comes from the 2011 skits that featured Kevin Hart and a bevy of other “husbands” from Bobby Brown, Nick Cannon, Nelly, etc. The series will be continuing from those hilarious sketches and has been said to be a more scripted with improv like the show Curb Your Enthusiasm.  In addition to those that were featured in the sketch (Nelly, Nick Cannon, etc), Robin Thicke and Boris Kodjoe have been added into mix as well as Duane Martin, JB Smoove and Faizon Love.

The first time they did the sketch on the 2011 BET awards, they were hilarious. They tried to do it again at this year’s award show and it failed miserably. Here’s hoping they get it right. I for one shall be watching only for the eye candy factor (Kodjoe? Thicke? yes please) because since this is BET you know it has disaster written all over it.

Live! with Kelly has searched for a cohost for what seems like forever. There have been many people filling in and auditioning for the role as the next Regis from Seth Myers, Josh Groban, Neil Patrick Harris and Nick Lachey. It seems the coveted position might be going to former New York Giants player and current NFL analyst on FOX’s NFL Sunday, Michael Strahan. Strahan has said to be one of the three top picks for the position with Nick Lachey, Josh Groban and Seth Myers being the other front-runners. Myers debunked that rumor saying he was going to be focusing on his head writer duties at Saturday Night Live (Hopefuly making it funnier). Live! With Kelly will officially announce the new cohost on their September 4th show.

I don’t watch this show often but from the episodes that I have seen with Strahan, he’s pretty hilarious and goes really well with her. I just thought there was no way that they would give him the job when I saw that he was one of their top choices. I figured it would go to Nick Lachey, who was just coming off hosting NBC’s The Sing-Off and has transitioned pretty well into being a host. His episodes with Kelly were good ones too so I figured him. Good job to Strahan if he gets the job and hopefully this isn’t all a stunt to get people ready for the announcement and then they not give it to the poor man because his name has been all over the place since it “leaked” that they were going to give him the job.

Director/Producer Tony Scott Found Dead

Director/Producer Tony Scott was found dead Sunday afternoon from an apparent suicide. The Daily Breeze reported that Scott jumped off the Vincent Thomas Bridge close to Long Beach, CA. They have suggested that police found a suicide not left his vehicle but that has not been confirmed.

Scott is best known for his directing duties in Top Gun with Tom Cruise, Beverly Hills Cop II with Eddie Murphy, to Unstoppable and The Taking of Pelham 123, etc with Denzel Washington. He was also a major producing force in Scott Free Productions along with his brother Ridley Scott (director of Alien, Prometheus, Gladiator). Together they have been a major force in bringing so many great films (Days of Thunder, Man on Fire, Crimson Tide) and shows to television (The Good Wife, Numb3rs, Gettysburg).

So sad to see that things weren’t going well for him that he felt he had to take his own life. The 68-year-old is survived by a wife, 2 children and a brother.

Beyonce – I Was Here World Humanitarian Day (August 19) Video

LOVE Beyonce. Nice video. She looks great and the video is for a great cause.

Sparkle Review

Sparkle is a remake of the 1976 film of the same name. The film is set in the 1960’s about three sisters that form a girl group and on their rise to fame, things become challenging  as the close-knit family begins to fall apart. Sparks plays Sparkle, the quiet, good girl who writes the songs for the group, Tiki Sumpter(Gossip Girl, The Game) plays the sister who has other plans and only joins the group to help her sisters and make some money to go to medical school and the beautiful Carmen Ejogo (Sally Hemings: An American Scandal; Lackawanna Blues) plays Sister, the Diana Ross like lead singer of the group. Whitney Houston, in her last role, plays the overbearing single mother who is a recovering addict and doesn’t want will do everything in her power for her girls to not to end up down the path she went.

Many people will say this is a Dreamgirls rip-off. Not quite. The original Sparkle was released before the original Dreamgirls and kind of served as a blueprint on what to do and not do when they made another movie loosely based on the Supremes. It’s not a Dreamgirls copy but since that was the last girl group biopic that came out, it’s going to get the comparisons. It’s not as good as Dreamgirls, but it is a solid movie. Jordin Sparks, in her first acting role, is perfectly fit as Sparkle. Sparks natural innocence and good girl nature are pretty much perfect for this part. I don’t know why she isn’t bigger than she is because her voice is soooo great. Houston is not in the film as much as they made you believe but her parts were pretty well acted. Whitney has always been a better than ok actress so it was kind of nice to see that even after all the years of craziness that she had been through, she still had it in her to give a good slightly melodramatic performance. Carmen Ejogo is so stunning and a great actress. She plays Sister so well.

Sparkle is not perfect but its pretty good and worth seeing at least to watch Whitney tear up a rendition of “His Eyes on A Sparrow.” It just gets to you. So powerful.

Sparkle is in theaters today.
