Mid-Season New and Returning Shows (2013)

The holidays are here and all your shows are in reruns or got cancelled (I’ll miss you Emily Owens, M.D). I know you are pretty anxious for their return. Don’t fret, you can find the dates of every single show’s return date as well as new shows that will be premiering this Winter at the bottom of this post. Shows return as early today, the 1st of the year. Here are some the returning and new shows I’m looking forward to.

The Americans (FX) Series premiere January 21 @ 10/9c.

Keri Russell back on television?? YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!! And playing a bad ass?? Double YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!! FX has stepped up their game when it comes to their programming (Sons of Anarchy, Justified, It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia, etc) and this show looks like it will be no exception. This show set in the Cold World era stars Keri Russell (Felicity, Mission Impossible 3) and Matthew Rhys (Brothers & Sisters, The Edge of Love) as KGB officers, who are working as sleeper agents trained to impersonate American citizens in Washington D.C. This is going to be great. Hopefully this show will do well and keep Russell on TV where she belongs.

The Good Wife (CBS) Season 4 resumes January 6th @ 10/9c

Season 4 hasn’t been the best but it’s still been better than half the shows on television. This season we are in the middle of has been very hit and miss, mostly because everything is not in sync. The storyline with Kalinda (Archie Panjabi) and her husband, played by Marc Warren (Doctor Who, Mad Dogs) is one of the biggest missteps that has happened to this show. The show creators, Robert and Michelle King, told TV Guide recently, they are going to fix things. They stated:

“You don’t give James Bond a girlfriend. Some characters you actually don’t want to see that much backstory. We’re adjusting. No matter where we went, this was not a place where the audience wanted to go.”

Hopefully the ship gets righted with the rest of the season. Check out the promo for the next new episode, “Boom De Ya Da.”

Partners, 666 Park Avenue and Last Resort Cancelled

Cancellations are afoot. The ax was dropped on 3 new shows Friday. CBS cancelled new comedy, Partners and ABC cancelled 666 Park Avenue and Last Resort.

Partners is the second show cancelled by CBS this season. They were the first network to cancel a show this fall with the critically and audience panned, Made In Jersey. Partners seemed like it would be ok. It was created by creators of  Will & Grace and that show was good so I thought this one had potential. Plus Michael Urie was in it so I was up for it.  The show premiered to 7 million and steadily went down from there. The post How I Met Your Mother spot seems to have bad luck for new comedies on CBS. The last 3 shows to premiere in that 8:30/7:30c timeslot (Mad Love, Accidentally On Purpose, Welcome To The Captain) have all been cancelled. CBS has taken Partners off the schedule and will more than likely dumb the rest of the episodes that have been produced on Saturday night.

666 Park Avenue just never took off at all. It premiered to 7 million viewers and hit a series low of under 4 million with the latest episode that aired last Sunday. I watched the premiere and it was ok. I wanted it to be better as it has a pretty great cast on the show, but it just didn’t and I have 5 aired episodes still unwatched on my dvr. Last Resort also got cancelled by ABC. The show was a critical favorite but suffered from low ratings. The show was good but I it just didn’t click with me. I tried to stick to the show but after 4 episodes I was pretty much done with it. Poor Andre Braugher though. He just can’t catch a break. His last show, Men of A Certain Age was cancelled by TNT last year because of low ratings. ABC will air the rest of 666 and Last Resort‘s 13 episodes.

What To Watch: November 2

8/7c – ABC – Last Man Standing – Season 2 Premiere. Mike does all he can to persuade first-time voter Mandy to vote for Governor Romney in the upcoming presidential election. But when he lobbies her heavily, he finds himself going up against her older sister, Kristin, and Boyd’s father, Ryan, who are just as enthusiastic for President Obama and disagree with Mike’s trying to influence Mandy. While they all battle for Mandy’s vote and soul, Vanessa remains neutral in the interest of family harmony.

8/7c – CBS – Undercover Boss – Season 4 Premiere. Mitchell B. Modell, CEO of Modell’s Sporting Goods, gets some major league advice from New York Yankee’s pitcher CC Sabathia before beginning his undercover mission. Also, a discontent employee confronts the CEO when suspicions swell about his true identity, and shocking news from the boss causes one employee to collapse.

8:30/7:30c – ABC – Malibu Country – Series Premiere. Reba McKenzie very publicly discovers that her country music legend husband, Bobby Gallagher, has been cheating on her. Determined to get a fresh start and perhaps revive her own country music career, Reba packs up her sharp-tongued mother and two kids and drives cross country to live in Bobby’s Malibu beach-front party pad. Once there, gregarious and over-sharing neighbor Kim immediately reaches out with an offer to mentor Reba as she adjusts to Southern California. With a new home and a much more liberal west coast set of rules, Reba, her kids and mom welcome the change, but soon realize that the open-mindedness of Southern California goes much farther than they’d expected. When Reba finds that trying to get her foot back in the music business is going to be an uphill battle, she befriends Geoffrey, the assistant to her record label’s president — who never seems to be in the office. Though overwhelmed and feeling out of place, Reba realizes that, all in all, family is what matters most, and they must learn to view their new Malibu lifestyle as a chance for a new beginning.

First Cut Of The Season: CBS Cancels “Made In Jersey”

I didn’t even get a chance to know you Jersey. CBS has cancelled freshman series Made in Jersey, making it the first network to cut a show in this new fall season. The series, which aired on Friday nights, premiered 2 weeks ago to the tune of 7.7 million viewers. This number isn’t terrible for a Friday but the number of people watching in the coveted 18-49 group for advertisers was extremely low. The number only got lower on the 2nd week thus prompting CBS to make the chop. It will be replaced by the reality show Undercover Boss at the beginning of November.

This show was just so-so as I said in a post 2 weeks ago. The only thing that I was excited about was that my man Kristoffer Polaha was going to be in it. So sad. He just can’t catch a break at all. All of his series where he has been a regular in the last 6 years have been cancelled, either after a few episodes or after one season. Hopefully his next show will get picked up and make it or he can just get on an already established show as a new character.

With this cancellation by CBS, Entertainment Weekly has officially started its Fall TV Death Watch. See if your favorite shows will make it by May.

Fall TV Week 3 **Spoiler Alert**

Partners – Right off the bat it looks just like Will & Grace, which I liked. Glad Brandon Routh has found some steady employment. I didn’t love the show but I liked it. It was consistent and has some laughs. I like Sophia Bush’s character. I feel like she is still playing Brooke from One Tree Hill though. Michael Urie is adorable. It looks like he is playing a less bitchy version of his character on Ugly Betty. We’ll see how the next episode goes.

The Mindy Project – Liked it.  Its funny and quirky (not Zooey Deschanel annoying quirky. I love New Girl but sometimes its just too much). The show wasn’t a slam dunk but it has great potential. Mindy Kaling is a great writer so I only see the show getting better. I thought the supporting characters were pretty good as well. This gets a season pass because I really like Kaling.
