2012 Emmy Nominations Are Here!!!!!

2012 Emmy nominations were announced this morning and there were shocking nominations at all. They were announced by Late Night With Jimmy Kimmel’s own Jimmy Kimmel and Scandal‘s Kerry Washington (chick looked specially fresh-faced for it being 5:30 in the morning L.A time).  Kimmel showed up in his pajamas to read the noms because of the ungodly hour. He was his hilarious self as usual and brought a breath of fresh air to the usually stiff nomination reading.

Entertainment News

Some entertainment headlines from the past week.

Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler both announced this week that they will be leaving the American Idol judging panel. There has been speculation for weeks about Lopez’s exit but Tyler’s came a little as a surprise. But not that surprising as there were rumors of major shake ups on Idol coming (Budget cuts, lots of firings). There are even some talks about Randy Jackson moving towards being a mentor towards contestants and not being a judge. Now that these two have left, who is going to take their place? Some of the names being tossed around as replacements are Adam Lambert (season 8 Idol runner-up), Celine Dion, Charlie Sheen, Mary J. Blige and Mariah Carey. I love Mariah and I think she would be great. It still wouldn’t get me to watch the show though. I don’t think anything could.  All these big names they want are expensive though and I don’t see any of them except Lambert taking less than $15 million for the gig. Just to put it into perspective Lopez made $20 million per year as a judge. That isn’t going to save them any money at all. I’m sure that in the coming weeks there will be more speculation and a ton more names thrown out there as replacements. It’s always funny watching the process unfold.

Get ready ladies. Another round of Magic Mike is on the way. Channing Tatum said “Yes, yes and yes!” during a Twitter interview with Glamour U.K when asked about a sequel to the his hit movie. “We’re working on the concept now. We want to flip the script and make it bigger.” Hmmm I don’t know about a sequel to this movie. Granted I liked it and all but there is no need for a sequel. The movie was resolved. If there were to do a sequel Tatum’s character wouldn’t be in it because at the end of the first one **SPOILER** he quits stripping. I mean there is plenty of eye candy there to continue I guess but story-wise it just needs to end.

R&B singer and songwriter, Frank Ocean’s new album, Channel Orange was released a week early this past Monday on Itunes. And while that might not seem like a problem for most people, apparently Target took offense and has decided not to stock the physical album that will be released this coming Tuesday, July 17th. Ocean’s manager, Christian Clancy was not happy about this and tweeted, “Target has refused to carry Frank’s album because of iTunes exclusive. Interesting since they also donate to non-equal rights organizations.” This in reference to Target having made donations to anti-gay political organizations. Ocean essentially came out revealed the week before on his tumblr page and that seems to be the reason Clancy is bringing that up. Target has come out and said their reasoning for not carrying the album is because Ocean’s management team released the album online first and not for any other reason. I would believe Target except Jay-Z and Kanye West did the same thing when they released their joint album, Watch The Throne, last August and Target still carried their album. It doesn’t matter to me though.  I was always going to get the album and it was always going to come from Best Buy who will surely reap all the benefits from carrying the album. Channel Orange is now available on iTunes and in stores this Tuesday. Check out his performance on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.

There is a new Walking Dead trailer for season 3 that came from Comic Con this week. It shows the survivors working together to clear the undead from that ominous prison glimpsed at the end of the last season. The footage also shows a katana-wielding new character Michonne (Danai Gurira) slicing through zombies and teaming up with Andrea (Laurie Holden). The trailer ends with a shot of Michael Rooker’s scumbag character Merle, who escaped from a pair of handcuffs by slicing off his appendage back in the first season. In the third season footage, Merle sports a knife for a right arm.   This looks crazy as hell. Can’t wait for it to start. The Walking Dead season 3 premieres October 14 on AMC.

Yay more Hunger Games news. Lionsgate has announced that they are going to be splitting up the third installment of the series, Mockingjay into 2 parts. They will start with Catching Fire hitting theaters on November 22, 2013, Mockingjay, Part 1on November 21, 2014, and Mockingjay, Part 2 on Nov. 20, 2015. This way, like the Harry Potter and Twilight franchises, every Thanksgiving families can head out to the theaters and see kids kill each other. Entertainment Weekly has a nice article on the possible places where they could split it up. There are many spoilers so if you haven’t read the book don’t even click on the link.

Feeling Very Uninspired

The summer season has been in full swing and I have just been generally uninspired by anything that is on now. Not that it isn’t good but it just hasn’t been great. On top of that there haven’t been any new movies in the past 2 weeks for me.  I am also in the middle of packing and trying to get things finished at work before my move so it’s been a little crazy. I say all this to tell you that I’m sorry my brain is empty and that I have no posts 🙂

While summer is usually a wasteland of really bad reality television there are some good shows on now. To name a few there is the entire USA lineup [Necessary Roughness (Wednesdays 9/8c), Burn Notice (Thursday 9/8c), Covert Affairs (Tuesday 10/9c), White Collar (Tuesday 9/8c), Royal Pains (Wednesday 10/9c), Suits (Thursday 10/9c), Common Law (Friday 10/9c), Political Animals (Premieres July 15th @10/9c)], TNT’s lineup [Rizzoli & Isles (Tuesday 10/9c), Perception (Monday 10/9c), Franklin & Bash (Tuesday 9/8c), Dallas (Wednesday 10/9c), & Major Crimes (Premieres August 13th @ 10/9c)], Awkward (MTV,Thursday 10/9c), True Blood (HBO, Sunday 9/8c), and Newsroom(Sunday 10/9c). So those weren’t a few but you get my drift. Check out some of these shows and I hope you are enjoying the nice schizophrenic summer weather we are having. Also let me know if there is something that you want me to talk about and I will get on it stat.

BET Awards 2012

The BET Awards aired their annual show last night and they should have just called the show “The Carters and Kimye” because that is all the camera cut to for most of the show. The show ran 3 1/2 hours and that is minus the pre-show. Lets’s start with the pre-show. It ran for 2 hours and was just a hot bed of ignorance and

Machine Gun Kelly performing. He’s …. enthusiastic and sadly he’s was one of the better performances on the pre-show.

Rocsi and Terrence. Ughh Why? She looks like a bedazzled hot mess. They said they are leaving 106 & Park. I need that show to end now. Terrence quitting I understand, Rocsi no. Just because you upgraded to Eddie Murphy as a boyfriend doesn’t mean you need to quit your day job because lets be real you really have no job prospects. It seems like the male former hosts of 106 &Park always end up doing bigger and better things than the show but the women always falter. I mean who has seen Julissa or Free in anything since they left the show.

Ann Curry Announces New Role at NBC News

Ann Curry confirmed today what has been the worst kept secret ever that she will no longer be on NBC’s Today show couch after 15 years. Rumors have been circulating for the past week about the Today show host exit. She will now be an Anchor at Large and National and International Correspondent for NBC News and do global stories, primetime specials and reports for TodayNightly NewsRock CenterDateline and MSNBC. Savannah Guthrie is said to be a shoe-in for her spot on the couch but nothing has been announced yet.

They pretty much fired her and they are trying to make it seem like she’s getting a better gig and she’s clearly not. It sucks that they are blaming the ratings decline of the show on her. Today has always dominated in the morning show ratings and have been on the downward slide for some years now with ABC’s Good Morning America even beating them at times in the past few months. I don’t believe this is her fault. I think the ratings haven’t been that great since Katie Couric left and that a lot of people just aren’t watching as much daytime tv. The ratings for most daytime shows have been on a downward slope for sometime. Here is the video of her farewell. It’s pretty sad but she needs to put a smile back on that face since she’ll be pocketing the rest of the $20 million from her contract to not work for the show.

Headlines From The Week

So much going on in the tv and movie world this week. Here are some from this week.

Arsenio Hall Returning To Late Night Whoop, Whoop, Whoop Whoop. Arsenio Hall is going to get his own late-night talk show again.  CBS Television Distribution is developing a new syndicated talk show for the comedian to debut next fall. It has been almost 20 years since the Arsenio Hall Show ended and we hadn’t really seen much of the comedian lately. Arsenio was recently seen on Donald Trump’s Celebrity Apprentice, where he was crowned the winner over former American Idol runner up, Clay Aiken. In interviews leading up to the finale of Celebrity Apprentice, Hall made many statements about wanting to return to late-night. Clearly someone was taking note. True Blood Season 5 Premiere Postmortem ***Spoilers***

True Blood’s Season 5 premiered last Sunday and it did not disappoint. It picked up from where it left off last season with Tara’s brains on the floor, Debbie dead, and Bill and Eric killing Nan. There were so many crazy things in this episode that in hindsight are just a normal day in Bon Temps but as I was watching all I could say was wow. The scene with Eric and his “sister” was so ridiculous. I was like wasn’t just pinning over Sookie like 3 scenes ago and what is it with Jason Stackhouse that everyone is so in love with? He has to be the dumbest character on the show. It’s like he walks in the room and chicks start taking their clothes off. It’s quite hilarious.

I know a lot of people hate Tara but I like her. When I saw them shoot her last season, I just thought Rutina Wesley was done on the show. I didn’t think they would be bringing her back because I mean literally her brains were all over Sookie’s kitchen. I didn’t think that she could be made into a vampire. It’s predictable but I just didn’t see it happening. Now that it has and her maker is Pam, I am looking forward to Rutina Wesley and Kristin Bauer working together. I think this will give Tara a lot to work with and make her not so much of a victim. It might also lighten her up a bit because Pam is funny as hell. I think Lafayette and her have the funniest lines. It’s gonna be a crazy season with the Authority, Russell escaping and Terry’s craziness coming to the forefront. I can’t wait.

Best line from the premiere. When Sookie questions Pam’s team spirit in helping them turn Tara, she replies, “I am wearing a Wal-Mart sweatsuit for y’all. If that’s not a demonstration of team spirit, I don’t know what is.”

Episode 2 airs tonight at 9/8c on HBO. Here is a promo.

New Show Alert: ABC Family’s Bunheads

image

Bunheads is a new show coming to ABC Family from the creator of Gilmore Girls, Amy Sherman-Palladino. The show centers on Michelle (Tony award winner Sutton Foster), a Las Vegas showgirl who impulsively gets married, moves to her new husband’s small hometown, and takes a teaching position at her new mother-in-law’s (Kelly Bishop) dance school.

I watched the pilot and I was in within the first 15 mins. It’s so fantastic. I fell in love instantly. The way the episode ends completely hooked me for the rest of the season. I just want to know what happens now. I was a huge fan of Gilmore Girls so I’ll watch anything from Palladino. The writing here is just as fun and witty as Gilmore and the acting is pretty good. Kelly Bishop, who played the mother and grandmother of the Loreleis, plays the mother in law to Sutton Foster’s Michelle.

Bunheads premieres on ABC Family Monday, June 11th at 9/8c.

Network Upfronts 2012

I know I’m over 3 weeks late here but…. better late than never right? So upfronts happened and brought about the final nail to the coffins of many shows as well as plenty of renewals for the networks. We also get a preview of what the fall 2012 has in store for us.

Lets’s start with ABC. Their cancelled shows for the 11-12 season were Charlie’s Angels, Desperate Housewives, GCB, Man Up!, Missing, Pan Am, The River and Work It. Renewed shows are Castle, Modern Family, Body of Proof, Cougar Town, Dancing With the Stars, Grey’s Anatomy, Happy Endings, Last Man Standing, Once Upon A Time, Private Practice, Revenge, Suburgatory, The Bachelor, and The Middle.

I’m not really sad about any of the shows that were cancelled here. The only one that I feel they should have given more time to was GCB. Maybe let it run a little more in the summer to catch more of an audience. Their ratings weren’t terrible either so I didn’t really understand that one. As for everything that got renewed YES, YES, YES especially Cougar Town. TBS came in with a last minute save on the show because ABC was definitely going to ax it. So come this fall Cougar Town will no longer air on ABC but on TBS. Continue reading Network Upfronts 2012
